Ho Chi Minh City – Ms. Tam, 45 years old, had sagging, oversized breasts that caused shoulder and neck pain and difficulty breathing. She underwent surgery to reduce the size of her breasts and remove a benign tumor.
On October 28th, Dr. Nguyen Do Thuy Giang, Head of the Breast Surgery Department at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, stated that excessively large breasts combined with high blood pressure and spinal degeneration cause patients to constantly feel heaviness, neck pain, and difficulty breathing.
Ultrasound and mammography results for breast cancer screening revealed a 2 cm tumor in Ms. Tam's breast, which was found to be benign upon biopsy. After 5 hours, the patient underwent surgery to remove the tumor, reduce the size of the enlarged breast, and preserve as much of the nipple as possible.
The patient said she had been self-conscious about her appearance for the past 10 years. After the surgery, her breasts were slimmer and no longer sagging. "I feel less burdened on my shoulders and spine, I no longer have difficulty breathing, and I feel more confident," Ms. Tam said.

According to Dr. Giang, breast hypertrophy is a condition where fibrous tissue tumors in the breast grow rapidly and become excessively large and heavy (more than 3% of body weight), occurring in one or both breasts. Most of these fibrous tumors are benign, but they can cause an unbalanced figure in women, and may lead to shoulder and neck pain, numbness in the hands, headaches, shortness of breath, and loss of sensation in the nipples.
Some cases involve inflammation and ulceration of the nipple folds, stretch marks and sagging skin on the breasts, and rashes. Women often lose confidence, affecting their mental health and making it difficult to choose clothing.
Breast enlargement in girls during puberty can lead to psychophysiological changes, body image issues, and negatively impact their quality of life.
Dr. Giang added that breast enlargement surgery is usually not difficult, but excessively large breasts make it difficult to maintain the shape of the nipples. In cases of enlargement accompanied by cancer, surgery is often combined with treatment and breast reduction. After surgery, breast enlargement can still recur, especially in girls who have just gone through puberty or whose breasts are still developing, young women, or women of childbearing age.
