The Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper has become the latest and rare newspaper in Vietnam to charge for reading e-newspapers. For only 100,000 VND, readers have unlimited access to this section for 30 days. There are many different packages for readers to choose from, including paying for each article. Readers who do not subscribe can continue to read news and articles for free on nld.vn, except for the "For VIP readers" section. The registration and payment process is very simple and safe through technical cooperation with VCCorp, NAPAS and MoMo.

Previously, VietnamPlus e-newspaper of Vietnam News Agency had been testing since 2012 and officially charged since November 2018. According to the introduction, VietnamPlus's paid articles have in-depth analysis, exclusive interviews... produced by the editorial board itself or translated under the franchise of major press agencies in the world . VietnamPlus e-newspaper is also the first press agency in Vietnam to charge for reading content on an online platform.

Then, on March 29, 2021, Ngay Nay also became the first e-magazine in Vietnam to charge readers. To be able to read and store articles in the "Special Today" section of Ngay Nay e-magazine, readers pay a fee with the lowest packages of 10,000 VND/week or 25,000 VND/month.

It can be said that charging for reading electronic newspapers is a trend in the world in the digital and online era. More and more press agencies in the world, from local newspapers to global newspapers, are charging readers.

Charging for reading e-newspapers has been around for a long time. The Wall Street Journal (USA) started charging for reading e-newspapers in 1997. The New York Times (USA) started charging online in September 2005 but had to stop this practice in September 2007 due to business reasons. It was not until March 2011 that The New York Times resumed charging for reading e-newspapers but with more appropriate adjustments.

There are many ways to charge for reading e-newspapers. Many newspapers allow people to read for free for the first time or a certain number of articles before switching to charging. The most common way is to allow basic content to be read for free, only charging for special articles or sections. Some newspapers allow readers to read the first part of an article and then hide the content for paying customers. The American newspaper USA Today once applied a method of only allowing free reading of the day's information, and if you wanted to read older articles, you had to pay $1/article.

Practical experience shows that to successfully charge online readers, newspapers must meet two important requirements: Having appropriate fees with flexible packages and having special, exclusive content. In Vietnam, newspapers should only charge for specialized content. To maintain this form of paid newspaper reading, newspapers must invest in special, exclusive content that is highly attractive to readers.

At this point, there is probably no need to explain much about why we have to charge for online newspaper reading. It is inevitable. The problem is how newspapers apply it to satisfy readers. Of course, the leading newspapers will have difficulties, but that is the mission to pave the way for a new trend in communication.
