The family of Ms. Trieu Thi Phin, in Khuoi Sa village, is one of the households with the largest area of dong leaf plants in the commune. Ms. Phin said: "Previously, the plants mainly grew naturally. Recognizing that the plant was suitable for the local climate and soil conditions and brought economic benefits, since 2015 my family has proactively propagated and planted dong leaf plants under the forest canopy on an area of about 4 hectares. Every year, at the end of November in the lunar calendar, my family is busy with the dong leaf harvest. On average, my family harvests about 150,000 to 170,000 leaves each year, bringing in an income of over 90 million VND."
Similarly, the family of Ms. Trieu Thi Dam in Khuoi Bay A village also earns a high income from growing dong leaves. These days, her family has to mobilize four family members to harvest the leaves. While quickly harvesting the leaves to sell to traders, Ms. Dam shared: "Dong leaves are usually grown by people under the forest canopy, along streams - areas with high humidity. The plant can be harvested many times a year, but people mainly harvest it during the Tet holiday. This is an easy plant to grow, it doesn't require much care, and we only need to weed twice a year. From 2020 to the present, my family has grown dong leaves on an area of more than 2 hectares, averaging about 100,000 leaves harvested each year, bringing in nearly 60 million VND in income."
Not only the two households mentioned above, but in recent years, recognizing the economic benefits of the dong leaf plant, many households in the commune have actively propagated and expanded the area planted with dong leaves. To date, the entire commune has 41.5 hectares of dong leaf plants, mainly grown in villages such as Khuoi Sa and Khuoi Bay A... This is one of the communes with the largest area of dong leaf plants in the province. Currently, the biggest dong leaf harvest of the year is underway, so people in the commune are urgently harvesting to sell to traders, with the main markets being provinces and cities such as Bac Ninh, Hanoi , and Hai Phong…
According to local banana leaf growers, an average of 30,000 to 40,000 leaves can be harvested per hectare. With wholesale prices ranging from 550 to 600 VND per leaf, growers can earn between 15 and 25 million VND per hectare (depending on leaf quality and the time of sale). This provides a considerable income, contributing to improving the lives of the people.
Mr. Luong Thanh Chuyen, Head of the Economic Department of Doan Ket Commune, said: "The dong leaf plant is one of the crops that brings quite stable economic benefits to people in the commune, especially during the Lunar New Year. By utilizing the available natural conditions in the stream and forest canopy areas, people have a significant additional income from this plant. In the future, we will continue to promote and encourage people to take care of the existing dong leaf area, expand the planting area under the forest canopy; coordinate the organization of training courses on planting, caring for, and preserving dong leaves; encourage people to cooperate in production and consumption, and build the Doan Ket dong leaf brand to increase value and expand the market, helping people feel secure in their production."
It is evident that, thanks to the cultivation of the dong leaf plant, the people of Doan Ket commune have been gradually gaining a stable income and improving their living standards. Importantly, besides bringing economic value, the model of growing dong leaves under the forest canopy also contributes to protecting the ecological environment and raising awareness of forest conservation among the local people.
