Try a new model

Ms. Duong Thi Ha used to be a kindergarten teacher. After getting married, she taught, while her husband worked for hire, so their finances were not very good. In 2019, when the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, her family's life was also affected and faced many difficulties. While surfing Facebook, Ms. Ha came across an article about the frog farming model, so she clicked on it out of curiosity. Realizing that this model could help improve the family's economy, she and her husband learned more about this profession.

Initially, Ms. Ha's family raised 3,000 frogs on a trial basis. Because no one in the surrounding area had developed this model to learn from, the couple worked and learned at the same time. The new model had many difficulties, from finding a location to build a pond, choosing breeds to care techniques, disease prevention, etc.

Due to lack of experience, the frog herd suffered a lot of losses. The first batch, although it took a lot of effort, after deducting all expenses, there was no profit. Ms. Ha thought: I can't give up so easily! Thinking so, she continued to read books and newspapers and learned that in Bao Yen district, many families had succeeded with this model. She and her husband traveled to Bao Yen to ask for experience from previous breeders. With the knowledge learned, her family applied it to their family's model. After only 2 years (2021), Ms. Ha's family was able to produce their own offspring. The model quickly recovered capital and made a profit.

“Riding on the momentum”, by 2022, Ms. Ha discussed with her husband to invest in 13 more tanks and she decided to focus full-time on developing the frog farm. By 2023, Ms. Ha’s family increased the scale to 33 tanks. To proactively source food, her family purchased a food mixer. The total investment cost for the model is nearly 300 million VND.

Up to now, each year, Ms. Ha's family's frog farm sells nearly 8,000 kg of frog seeds and commercial products. With an average price of 70,000 VND - 80,000 VND/kg, this model brings in a revenue of about 600 million VND. After deducting expenses, each year her family has an income of about 200 million VND. This is not a small number for a family in a rural area in Lao Cai province.

Mr. Van Gia Lam, Chairman of the People's Committee of Liem Phu Commune, commented: The economic development model of Ms. Ha's family is a model for the commune to promote and encourage other households to follow. The commune also guides and supports Ms. Ha's family to develop more frog products to make products that meet OCOP certification.

In addition to economic development, Ms. Ha and her family always set an example in implementing the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's policies and laws, and mobilizing and propagating family members and relatives to participate in local movements...
