British Prime Minister wants to build "close and frank" relationship with the US

British Chancellor Rishi Sunak is expected to attend a baseball game with business leaders and politicians in Washington DC before holding talks with President Joe Biden next week.

In a statement ahead of his visit to the US from June 7-8, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak affirmed that Washington is London's "closest ally" and the two sides are "each other's top priority partners on all issues, from ensuring security for people to economic development".

The Downing Street boss also stressed the importance of building a "close and frank relationship" with the host country's president, after some signs of tension in bilateral relations.

The two leaders are expected to discuss improving economic ties and maintaining military support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.

However, according to a spokesman for Prime Minister Sunak, there will be no negotiations on a formal free trade agreement.

Downing Street said on June 3 that the upcoming meeting in Washington DC will be the fourth between the two leaders in the past few months, following events in San Diego, Belfast and the G7 Summit in Hiroshima, Japan. This shows the "strong bond" between the two allies.

This is Mr. Rishi Sunak's first official visit to the US as British Prime Minister.
