With a 7/9 vote in favor, the Thai Constitutional Court on July 1 decided to suspend Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra from office while the court considers the lawsuit requesting his removal.
The court announced it had accepted a petition filed by 36 senators accusing Ms Paetongtarn of dishonesty and violating ethical standards set out in the Constitution, in connection with the leak of a politically sensitive phone call recording between her and Cambodia's influential leader Samdech Techo Hun Sen.

It is expected that a deputy prime minister will temporarily run the Thai government while the court considers the case.
Ms. Paetongtarn will continue to be in the cabinet as she has just taken on the additional position of Minister of Culture following a cabinet reshuffle announced the same day in the Royal Gazette.
The newly reshuffled cabinet is scheduled to be sworn in on July 3.
