Friendly library fosters passion for reading

With a green, friendly model combining activities associated with reading culture, many school libraries in Lak district have become ideal spaces to foster a love of books in students.

Quiet, airy space and displaying more than 7,000 scientifically arranged books, the friendly library at Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Primary School (Lien Son town) is a favorite place for students during recess.

Nguyen Diem Quynh, a student in class 3D, said: "During recess, my friends and I often go to the library to read books. The library has many types of books and stories suitable for our age. Because of limited time, I often choose stories that are easy to read and remember such as "Gordon Shouldn't Be Arrogant", "I'm Really Good", "The Diamond Castle" and many Vietnamese fairy tales".

Similarly, Ha Gia Linh, a student in class 3B, also enjoys visiting the school library. In addition to books and stories, the library also has magazines about school age, including articles about students with difficult circumstances who have excelled in their studies. Reading these articles gives her more motivation to study harder.

Ms. Ho Thi Hue, librarian of Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Primary School, said that with an area of ​​120 square meters, the library has more than 7,000 books of all kinds. To help students easily look up the type of book they are looking for, the library has arranged bookshelves according to each type. Every year, the school allocates funds to add books to serve the reading and reference needs of staff, teachers and students. Along with that, launching a movement to donate old books to both enrich the library and help students have more books to read.

In addition to enriching the books in the library, many reading activities are also organized by the school to arouse students' passion for reading. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, the school established a library working group with 60 members, including representatives of the Board of Directors, librarians, teachers, and students. The members are students who are selected from those who have a passion for reading. Under the guidance of librarians, they select good books and organize introductions in front of the school or within each class during collective activities.

In addition, the school also organizes monthly storytelling in front of the flag with appropriate themes. These are stories about teachers in remote schools who stick to the school and class to bring knowledge to students, which are told on the occasion of Vietnamese Teachers' Day (November 20); or stories about mothers who work hard and sacrifice so that their children can go to school. Many stories about the spirit of overcoming difficulties in studying of students in remote and island areas are told by the students in a concise and concise manner...

At Nguyen Van Troi Primary School (Dak Lieng Commune), with nearly 90% of students being ethnic minorities, attracting students to learn and explore stories through the pages of books is always a concern of the school's Board of Directors and the library department.

During recess, at the library, students divide into groups to read books, stories and exchange knowledge with each other freely. Depending on their interests, they choose books suitable for their age.

In the 2024-2025 school year, Nguyen Van Troi Primary School library has more than 6,000 books, divided into 4 categories: textbooks, professional books, reference books and children's books. The books are all numbered in order with their own symbols, arranged on shelves of each genre for students to easily find. In particular, the green library activity held regularly every Thursday morning has become a useful playground for students in the whole school.

According to Mr. Phan Thai Son, Principal of Nguyen Van Troi Primary School, in the 2024-2025 school year, the school has 17 classes with 466 students, of which 413 are ethnic minority students. In addition to regular classes, the school organizes reading activities in conjunction with many other activities such as the green library program and book introductions under the flag.

Head of the Departmentof Education and Training of Lak District, Nguyen Van Ngoc, assessed that the friendly library models have become useful playgrounds, contributing to improving reading, listening and speaking skills for students in schools. In particular, this model stimulates creativity, helps children develop intellectually and nurture their souls through age-appropriate books.
