The dynamics of the service industry

The main driving force for the growth of the province's service sector comes from wholesale and retail trade activities. Since the beginning of the year, the province has promoted trade, service and tourism activities, ensuring smooth circulation of goods, stable supply of raw materials, fuel and materials, promptly meeting production and business needs. Total retail sales of goods reached over VND 20,405 billion, up 13.6% over the same period last year and accounting for 78.8% of total service revenue. Many product groups recorded high growth rates, typically food and foodstuffs, up 18.09%; precious stones and precious metals, up 26.65% and auto, motorbike, motorbike and other motor vehicle repair services, up 28.39%.

Policies to support trade promotion, connect product consumption and develop e-commerce have increased the value of goods and expanded the market. Strengthening inspections and resolutely fighting against counterfeit goods and trade fraud have contributed significantly to raising the sense of responsibility of business households and enterprises, building solid trust for consumers and creating a transparent and healthy business environment, promoting sustainable development of the service industry.

Not only retail activities, Son La tourism industry also recorded strong growth. Thanks to promoting tourism promotion activities and successfully organizing many large-scale cultural and tourism festivals and events, Son La province has attracted a significant number of domestic and international tourists. In the past 6 months, revenue from accommodation and food services reached over VND 2,634 billion, up 14.27%; travel services alone increased by 17.41% over the same period. This reflects the effectiveness of tourism stimulus strategies and the potential of Son La province in exploiting cultural values and natural landscapes to create sustainable revenue.

Moc Chau Island Tourist Area is one of the bright spots of the tourism industry. Mr. Hoang Manh Duy, Deputy Director of Moc Chau Island Tourist Area, said: Since the beginning of the year, many festival, cultural, sports events and long holidays organized by the province and Moc Chau ward have promoted tourism and consumption demand, attracting a large number of tourists to the Tourist Area. Moc Chau Island has welcomed over 173,000 visitors, with revenue of nearly 100 billion VND, an increase of 30% over the same period last year. The tourist area has constantly improved service quality, applied technology and focused on exploiting local cultural values and special events; developed new products such as all-inclusive resort combos and prepared for major annual events, notably the 2025 Khen Calling Friends Market on the occasion of National Day, September 2, ready to welcome a large number of visitors during peak times.

Transportation and logistics activities play a vital role in the circulation of goods, especially agricultural products. In the past 6 months, passenger transport revenue reached over 314 billion VND, up 12.42% and freight transport revenue reached over 1,683 billion VND, up 12.84% over the same period last year. In addition, transportation and warehousing support services also increased by 12.25%, contributing to effectively supporting the logistics chain, meeting the production, business and consumption needs of both businesses and people in the province.

Focus on achieving growth targets

Despite achieving significant growth and ranking high in the region, the province's service sector has not yet reached the target of 9.2%. The main reason is the complicated fluctuations of the world economy, including: Trade war, tariff tensions and factors pushing up fuel prices, shipping costs, and the US dollar, causing significant pressure on the supply chain, commodity prices and domestic production costs. In addition, the trend of shifting supply chains and protectionist policies of many countries also contribute to increasing global costs. In addition, some service sectors have not yet fully exploited their potential and are not diverse enough to create a breakthrough beyond the set target.

Mr. Ha Nhu Hue, Director of the Department of Industry and Trade, said: Striving to achieve the growth target of the service sector, the Department focuses on reviewing and completing trade and service development plans in accordance with the planning of Son La province until 2050, ensuring consistency and feasibility. Promote investment attraction in key projects such as logistics centers, warehouses, agricultural wholesale markets, supermarkets, trade centers and high-quality tourism infrastructure. Support the connection of agricultural products and specialties of the province with domestic and foreign markets; promote the application of e-commerce to expand distribution channels, reduce costs and increase the value of goods.

To enhance the competitiveness of enterprises, the Department will organize training courses on trade promotion skills and information technology application. Be determined in the fight against smuggling, trade fraud, counterfeit goods, protect consumer rights and build a transparent business environment.

In 2025, the tourism industry strives to welcome about 5.2 million tourists and achieve total revenue of 6,300 billion VND. Mr. Tran Xuan Viet, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said: The Department advises the province to review tourism development planning; promote investment attraction in high-quality tourism infrastructure projects and upgrade traffic connecting destinations. Focus on exploiting indigenous cultural values, diversifying types of community, ecological and nature-experience tourism and effectively exploiting prominent destinations, such as: Moc Chau Island, Dai Yem Waterfall, Son La Prison National Special Relic Site, Pha Din Pass and Son La Hydropower Reservoir.

In addition, implement plans to organize large-scale cultural and tourism festivals and events, thereby promoting the local image and cooperating with provinces and cities across the country. Focus on improving service quality and human resources by training tourism skills, applying information technology, aiming for professional and friendly service standards, bringing the best experience to tourists.
