Promoting E10 biofuel:

Amidst the unpredictable fluctuations of global supply chains and the increasing pressures of climate change, promoting the use of E10 bioethanol is not only a crucial step in helping Vietnam realize its commitment to net emission reduction, but also a strategic leverage to strengthen fuel self-sufficiency and move towards sustainable development.

An inevitable step in the era of green transformation.

The journey to realize the Net Profit Target by 2050, as committed at COP26, requires decisive and substantive actions from all sectors, especially transportation – one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions today. Recently, E5 bioethanol fuel (5% ethanol blend) has been widely used, creating an important foundation for changing consumer habits. However, given the increasing demands for ecosystem protection, the transition to and eventual popularization of E10 fuel (10% bioethanol blend) is considered by experts to be a groundbreaking step, in line with the greening roadmap for the economy .

Raising the bioethanol content to 10% is not an experimental task, but a standard that has been successfully implemented in many advanced countries around the world . For Vietnam, this is the opportune time for the business community and the public to work together to make E10 the dominant fuel in the market.

The first core value that E10 bioethanol brings is the ability to enhance national energy independence and self-reliance. Despite exploration and exploitation efforts, Vietnam still has to import a large amount of crude oil and refined petroleum products to meet domestic demand. Every geopolitical shift in the world can put heavy pressure on the stabilization fund and people's wallets.

Self-sufficiency in domestic bioenergy not only saves a huge amount of foreign currency but also establishes a "shock-absorbing" shield against the seismic shifts in world oil prices.

If energy self-sufficiency is a macroeconomic value, then environmental protection is the direct humanitarian value that E10 brings to the quality of life of urban residents. In megacities like Hanoi, where millions of motorized vehicles operate every day, pollution from fine dust and emissions from internal combustion engines is always a pressing issue.

Scientific studies have shown that ethanol has a significantly higher oxygen content than traditional gasoline. When blended at a ratio of 10%, this oxygen helps the fuel combustion process in the engine cylinder to be more complete. As a result, E10 significantly reduces harmful components released into the environment, including CO, HC, and especially CO2 - the main culprit of the greenhouse effect.

The widespread switch to E10 gasoline would be equivalent to planting millions of trees in the heart of the city. This is the most practical, quick, and least expensive solution to purify the atmosphere and restore a clean environment to the capital while waiting for electric vehicle ecosystems to develop on a larger scale.

Ensuring product quality and operational safety.

Developing E10 biofuel is not merely a temporary solution, but a core strategy in the energy transition process, building a circular economy. Every liter of biofuel pumped into a tank is not only a cost-saving act, but also a vote in support of the development of the national economy and the survival of the ecological environment.

On May 15, 2026, Vietnam Oil Corporation – JSC (PVOIL), a member of the Vietnam National Energy and Industry Group (Petrovietnam), officially launched the sale of E10 bioethanol fuel at nearly 1,000 gas stations nationwide, marking a major step in the development of biofuels and the green energy transition in Vietnam.

PVOIL has completed all preparations for the nationwide rollout of E10 gasoline, from blending, storage, and transportation infrastructure to the distribution system and plans to ensure a large-scale supply of raw materials for blending.

Prior to the nationwide rollout, PVOIL's gas stations completed a final review and fully prepared all technical conditions, from storage tanks, pumps, pipelines to measuring equipment. Product information updates on the pumps were also implemented simultaneously. At the same time, cleaning of storage tanks, checking for leaks, and assessing the compatibility of equipment with E10 gasoline were carried out to ensure product quality and safety during business operations. Regarding the remaining RON 95 gasoline at the stations, the units will continue to sell it off before fully switching to E10 gasoline.

To ensure product quality and operational safety, PVOIL strictly controls quality management at all stages, from production, transportation, storage to distribution at gas stations. The corporation has also issued a technical guidance manual for units to implement uniformly, synchronously and correctly according to procedures throughout the system.

PVOIL began trial sales of E10 gasoline in Hanoi and Hai Phong on August 1, 2025, and gradually expanded to more provinces and cities. By May 13, 2026, 715 PVOIL gas stations were selling E10 gasoline. Practical results show that the E10 gasoline blended and supplied by PVOIL fully meets technical requirements, operates stably in vehicles, and is gradually gaining acceptance from consumers.

Alongside preparations at retail outlets, PVOIL has proactively secured supplies from its upstream warehouses. To meet mass market demand, PVOIL has converted its E5 gasoline blending infrastructure to E10, while simultaneously upgrading its tank systems, pipelines, and ethanol storage capacity. Currently, PVOIL's total E10 blending capacity reaches nearly 4 million m³/year, ready to supply the entire system and other units if needed.

The launch of E10 gasoline by PVOIL is not only in line with the Government and Ministry of Industry and Trade's roadmap for biofuel development, but also contributes to ensuring a stable supply of petroleum products for the market, strengthening national energy security, and demonstrating Petrovietnam's commitment to the green energy development trend, reducing emissions, and aiming for Vietnam's net-zero emissions target by 2050.
