According to Andrew, many people may not know that the actual geographical distance between Russia and the United States is only a few kilometers across the Bering Strait in the Pacific Ocean .
“The Diomede Islands are two islands 3.8 km apart. The larger island, closer to Russia, is under Russian sovereignty and is called Ostrov Ratmanova. The smaller island, called Little Diomede, is closer to US territory and belongs to the US.
“That means in winter, when the sea freezes, you can walk from America to Russia in just 20 minutes,” Andrew said.

However, Mr. Opik Ahkinga - environmental coordinator at Little Diomede Island, gave information that could disappoint many tourists.
In an interview with Science Magazine, Mr. Ahkinga said that since 2012, the sea between the two islands has not frozen due to climate change.

This directly affects the lives of people on the small island of Little Diomede. Because they need the ice thick enough to dig runways for small planes to land to transport necessities, goods or mail.
Currently, it is only possible to get here by helicopter, weather permitting. However, the cost is therefore much more expensive.
Meanwhile, Ratmanova Island is uninhabited because it is used as a Russian military base.

Visitors can only visit Little Diomede Island (USA). Visitors need a permit letter to visit the island. In recent years, visitors have been able to choose seasonal commercial flights from Nome to Little Diomede Island on Bering Air.
Additionally, a private helicopter company called Erickson Aviation also operates flights to this special island.
Since there are no motels or hotels on Little Diomede Island, visitors need to be well-prepared and contact local residents in advance. In addition to tourists, the island also regularly welcomes research groups and Alaskans from the mainland.
