UNCTAD forecasts global trade will exceed $35 trillion for the first time.
On December 9th, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) projected that global trade in goods and services will exceed $35 trillion for the first time in 2025.
According to UNCTAD, despite the impacts of geopolitical tensions, rising costs, and uneven demand, global trade is expected to maintain its growth momentum in the second half of 2025. Total trade is projected to increase by an additional US$2.2 trillion, equivalent to an increase of approximately 7% compared to 2024.
UNCTAD stated that the growth was primarily driven by increased transaction volumes, reflecting stable demand, rather than inflation caused by rising prices.
East Asia led export growth, with a 9% increase, while intra-regional trade also rose by 10%. Africa and South-South trade also saw strong recovery, highlighting the growing role of emerging economies .
The report highlights the trend of shifting trade towards partners with similar political views and geographical proximity, which is reshaping global trade chains.
UNCTAD forecasts weaker growth in 2026 due to a slowing global economy, rising debt, and persistently high trade costs.
