Accordingly, from a trade turnover of 3.26 billion USD in 1995, Vietnam-ASEAN trade has increased 30 times, reaching 91 billion USD in 2025. Furthermore, the structure of export goods is no longer limited to raw materials but has shifted strongly towards goods with high technological content and added value.

According to data from Vietnam Customs, eight ASEAN countries have invested in all 18 economic sectors of Vietnam, with the processing and manufacturing industry leading the way, totaling over US$22 billion. Amidst geopolitical competition and global energy fluctuations, Vietnam is increasingly asserting its central role in ASEAN, both promoting economic connectivity and enhancing the region's self-reliance and resilience.

To realize sustainable development goals in the "era of upward mobility," Vietnam is focusing on the digital economy through the ASEAN Framework Agreement on the Digital Economy (DEFA), leveraging new-generation FTAs ​​(RCEP, CPTPP), actively participating in the ASEAN Power Grid (APG), and the ASEAN Connectivity Master Plan. These are considered key drivers for maintaining high growth rates and participating more deeply in global value chains.

Dr. Le Phuong Hoa, Deputy Director of the Asia-Pacific Research Institute, believes that strengthening ASEAN's central role is a prerequisite for protecting the common development space. ASEAN has been Vietnam's "protective belt" from early on and from afar through multilateral forums organized by ASEAN, based on the supremacy of international law and UNCLOS 1982.

In the future, Vietnam will continue to play a coordinating and mediating role, mitigating centrifugal trends under the pressure of competition among major powers, and keeping the region an attractive destination for capital and technology. With a long-term vision and concrete actions, Vietnam is working with ASEAN to build a resilient, innovative, and sustainable community.
