The Clean Up the World campaign was launched globally by the United Nations Environment Programme in 1993 and is held annually during the third week of September. This activity aims to improve the effectiveness of environmental protection efforts and calls on individuals, groups, and communities to take practical actions to reduce pressure on nature and the environment, working towards the goals of a circular economy and sustainable development.

In response to the 2024 Clean Up the World Campaign, the Quang Tri Provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment has developed a communication plan and organized activities starting from the third week of September 2024. This includes promoting the regulations of the 2020 Environmental Protection Law and its implementing guidelines, especially the mandatory requirement for waste sorting at source by December 3, 2024 (Clause 1, Article 79 and Clause 1, Article 75 of the 2020 Environmental Protection Law). The plan also integrates content on circular economy, green economy, and sustainable development into the development and implementation of socio-economic development plans at the local level and within agencies and units.
Continue to launch community movements such as environmental cleanup campaigns, tree planting, and environmental improvement and restoration in urban areas, residential areas, and surrounding regions, especially on lakes, rivers, canals, and streams; clean the sea and coastal areas, focusing on collecting and recovering non-biodegradable plastic products, packaging, and nylon bags and transporting them to recycling and processing facilities according to regulations; hand over cleaned beaches and coastal areas to responsible organizations and units for management to prevent the recurrence of marine environmental pollution.
Strengthening environmental protection education and awareness campaigns in training programs aims to enhance community awareness, consciousness, and responsibility in protecting, preserving, and ensuring environmental hygiene in the area; sorting waste at source; minimizing waste generation; increasing waste reuse and recycling; rejecting the use of single-use plastic products and non-biodegradable plastic bags; and encouraging the development and use of environmentally friendly alternatives. Coordinating with management agencies to conduct awareness campaigns on control and monitoring activities in areas with high concentrations of pollution sources in industrial parks, clusters, craft villages, river basins, and environmental pollution hotspots; controlling pollution and improving air quality.
As of September 20, 2024, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment has implemented a campaign to raise awareness and encourage people to sort household solid waste at source in Vinh Hoa commune, with the aim of expanding this initiative throughout Vinh Linh district.
Specifically, a pilot project was implemented to build a model for sorting and processing household solid waste and plastic waste for 250 members of the Farmers' Association in Vinh Hoa commune, aiming to promote and guide the implementation of sorting household solid waste at source and recycling, thereby reducing plastic waste.
The model aims to maintain the habit of sorting waste in the daily lives of members and households, thereby reducing waste collection and processing costs, transforming plastic waste and recyclable waste into resources. The goal is for 100% of members to participate in sorting waste correctly and regularly during the support period, and at least 80% of member households to maintain waste sorting after the support activities end.
To date, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment has coordinated with the local government and mass organizations in Vinh Hoa commune to organize training sessions on the process of sorting household solid waste, collecting plastic waste, and treating food waste at the source. They have also handed over waste sorting tools and rubber flower pots to members...
The model is implemented based on the coordination and voluntary participation of members to achieve positive results.
Especially when people participate in the model and become aware of the important role and significance of waste sorting, it creates a ripple effect in the community. This is one of the practical activities of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment in actively responding to the Clean Up the World Campaign 2024.
