Braces are an effective method to improve aesthetics and bite. However, many people suffer serious consequences when choosing unreliable clinics, just because of the cheap price.
Doctors warn that these facilities lack adequate expertise, which can easily lead to errors in treatment and cause dangerous complications.
Recently, a 35-year-old female patient in Hanoi suffered serious consequences from braces at a clinic near her home. After two years of treatment, she discovered that her teeth were still protruding, her bite was misaligned, and some of her teeth roots were knocked out of the alveolar bone.
The doctor at the clinic did not detect this problem in time, leading to her having to undergo two surgeries to correct her jaw and remove the screws, along with prolonged pain. Currently, she continues to receive treatment to restore her jaw and improve her oral health.
Another case is a 19-year-old female student in Ho Chi Minh City who became a victim of “dental thieves” when she believed in an advertisement for braces costing 15 million VND on social media. After a period of braces, the girl saw no improvement and discovered that the clinic had closed.
When arriving at Tam Dental Clinic, Dr. Nguyen Minh said that due to the lack of teeth in the second jaw, the patient needed an implant to ensure chewing function. The protruding condition had not improved, and braces and bite correction were needed. This process would take about two years and cost nearly 50 million VND.
"The patient should have only needed two years to complete the process, but now it takes nearly four years and costs three times the original estimate," Dr. Minh commented.
Dr. Minh said many braces customers are victims of "dental thieves". Many clinics exploit the psychology of wanting cheap prices, advertising heavily on social platforms to attract customers. After collecting a large deposit, they disappear, close down, and abandon the treatment process.
Worryingly, many clinics today do not have properly trained doctors but only have assistants to perform braces. This leads to incorrect prescriptions, causing harm to the patient's health. Complications such as tooth roots coming out of the bone, tooth root resorption, gum recession, tooth decay, and misaligned bites are possible if the braces process is not closely monitored.
Associate Professor Tran Cao Binh, Director of the Hanoi Central Hospital of Odonto-Stomatology, recommends that patients only have braces performed at reputable dental facilities with full operating licenses. Patients need to ensure that the treatment process is closely monitored, from examination to treatment and regular check-ups to avoid risks.
