According to the women's affairs officer of Ta Rut commune, we visited the family of Ms. Ho Thi Xien (born in 1984), one of the exemplary cases of escaping poverty in Vuc Leng village, Ta Rut commune. At that time, she was busy preparing food for her livestock.
It is known that, in addition to the 7 pigs, she also raises 4 cows and 10 goats. Pointing to the pigs, Ms. Xiên shared: "In 2018, with a 4 million VND loan from the revolving fund of the Women's Union of the commune, my husband and I were able to buy a pair of breeding pigs."
"Through proper care, the pigs grew quickly and reproduced well. On average, my wife and I earn about 15 million VND per year from selling pigs. We have now repaid our debt so that the association can facilitate loans for other members, and we will continue to invest in restocking the herd."
Looking at the sturdy house and the thriving livestock farming model today, few would guess that Ms. Xiên once had a difficult past. She and her husband had to work many different jobs, but it wasn't enough to cover their expenses and educate their children. However, thanks to the timely support of the Women's Union at all levels, their current life has become much easier.
Like Ms. Xiên, the family of Ms. Hồ Thị Thở (born in 1987), living in Cu Tài 2 village, A Bung commune, Đakrông district, has had the opportunity to improve their lives thanks to the support of the Women's Union at all levels. Ms. Thở and her husband used to live in a makeshift house built on their neighbor's land. Without stable jobs, earning enough money for daily expenses was extremely difficult for them, so the dream of owning their own house remained a distant one.
Fortunately, at the beginning of 2018, through the "Accompanying Women in Border Areas" program implemented by the Ho Chi Minh City Women's Union in coordination with the Quang Tri Provincial Women's Union, Ms. Tho received 55 million VND to build a house and toilet.
“Having a house, my husband and I were able to borrow capital to buy cows and goats, developing our family's economy . With guidance from the Women's Union and Farmers' Association officials, we learned how to raise livestock and breed effectively. Through hard work and saving, our family's life gradually improved, and we had money to buy household items to meet our needs and for work. My husband and I are very grateful for the care and support from the women's associations at all levels that has helped our family achieve what we have today,” Ms. Tho confided.
Speaking with us, the Chairwoman of the Women's Union of A Bung commune, Ho Thi Theu, said that the commune currently has a total of 780 female members. The Women's Union of the commune has paid special attention to caring for the material and spiritual lives of its members for many years.
In addition to providing livelihood support, the association's branches also promote awareness and encourage members to be proactive, think outside the box, and take initiative to improve their lives.
“Based on the allocated and mobilized funds, we survey the actual situation of each member family to provide effective support. Some families receive support with seedlings and livestock; some members receive support with production tools and capital. We believe that in a border commune like A Bung, which still faces many difficulties, all support is meaningful. This is a motivation for women to strive for economic development and long-term stability in their lives,” said Ms. Thieu.
Not only in A Bung commune, but also in other areas, women's unions at all levels throughout the district have actively implemented many practical movements and programs to support women in ethnic minority areas in developing their economy and eradicating poverty.
Accordingly, women's associations at all levels in the area have actively exploited capital sources, especially entrusted loan capital from the Social Policy Bank; at the same time, they have mobilized capital from members through savings models to help women have capital for small-scale buying and selling, expanding production, and aiming for sustainable poverty alleviation.
Simultaneously, from the beginning of the year, the Standing Committee of the District Women's Union issued a directive to the Women's Unions of communes and towns to register and provide assistance and support to women's households to escape poverty. Through practical support in various forms such as: providing loans, technical training, supporting livestock, providing rice, building new houses, repairing houses, etc., in 2023 alone, 326 poor households with women and 59 poor households headed by women were helped to escape poverty by local Women's Union branches.
Thanks to that support, many families have built highly effective economic models; they have better lives and can provide their children with a proper education.
The Chairwoman of the Dakrong District Women's Union, Nguyen Thi Ty, affirmed that in recent years, activities to support women in disadvantaged areas to escape poverty and rise to prosperity have been implemented relatively effectively by all levels of the Women's Union, spreading widely throughout the locality. Thanks to this, many women in the mountainous region of Dakrong have gradually stabilized their lives; many have become role models for economic development, becoming exemplary figures in overcoming difficulties and escaping poverty.
"In the coming period, the District Association will continue to direct its branches to select and develop activities and models that have been implemented effectively, and invest further in quality."
Continue to maintain a comprehensive list of impoverished households and women in difficult circumstances in order to plan timely and appropriate assistance.
At the same time, we will promote and encourage members to boldly access loan sources to start businesses and develop household economies. In particular, the association will replicate exemplary individuals, good deeds, new factors, new models, and innovative approaches so that members can emulate them, become more confident in starting businesses, developing their economies, and achieving sustainable poverty alleviation,” Ms. Ty said.
