On May 20th, Ho Chi Minh City Power Corporation (EVNHCMC) announced that electricity consumption in the city continuously reached new peaks in mid-May, with peak power demand increasing by approximately 6% compared to 2025.

Specifically, the city's total electricity consumption on May 12th reached 195.09 million kWh; on May 13th it reached 196.19 million kWh, and on May 14th it continued to increase to 197.68 million kWh/day.

According to EVNHCMC, the highest daily electricity consumption as of May 14, 2026, was 10.6% higher than the highest consumption in 2025 (178.81 million kWh on August 5, 2025). Peak power (Pmax) at 3:30 PM on May 14 reached 9,471 MW, a 6% increase compared to the 2025 peak of 8,936 MW, recorded at the same time on August 5, 2025.

According to Mr. Bui Trung Kien, Deputy General Director of EVNHCMC, one of the reasons for the sharp increase in electricity consumption is the prolonged period of intense heat. While actual temperatures ranged from 36-37 degrees Celsius, the perceived outdoor temperature sometimes reached 40-42 degrees Celsius.

The sweltering weather has caused cooling devices in households, office buildings, and production facilities to operate at high intensity, leading to a sharp increase in electricity demand. In addition, although energy audits have been implemented in some businesses, their effectiveness and control solutions remain limited…

In the context of climate change and increasing urbanization, which puts greater pressure on the power system, the city's power sector has proactively developed response scenarios to ensure a safe and stable power supply.

Accordingly, EVNHCMC has reviewed transformers and power lines that have been in operation for a long time or frequently carry high loads; and has completed maintenance, repair, and defect resolution work before the peak of the dry season.

The electricity sector is also stepping up efforts to promote energy conservation among the public and businesses, coordinating with 168 communes and wards in the area to organize communication activities, inspect lighting systems, and advise on solutions for efficient electricity use.

To improve electricity efficiency in the coming period, Mr. Bui Trung Kien said that EVNHCMC will continue to improve the power grid, reduce incidents and power outage time, and enhance the reliability of electricity supply; while also strengthening load forecasting, monitoring operational data from the SCADA system, remote metering system and Customer Care Center.

Furthermore, Mr. Kien believes that the efficient and economical use of electricity from households to offices, along with technical solutions from the electricity sector, will contribute to ensuring a safe and continuous power supply for the city.

Currently, EVNHCMC is coordinating with the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade to encourage customers to shift 5-10% of their electricity consumption from peak hours (5 PM - 8 PM) to after 10 PM in the months starting from July 4th. The total potential for load shifting is estimated at approximately 210 MW.

In addition, the electricity sector continues to promote communication about energy saving and efficient use on websites, customer care applications, and social media platforms; organize events, competitions, game shows, and research activities related to safe and economical electricity use, linked to social welfare work.

According to EVNHCMC, Ho Chi Minh City has experienced rainy days and a decrease in temperature, but the risk of power outages due to the changing seasons remains. The power sector is continuing to inspect, address, and improve areas at risk of power failures to ensure stable electricity supply for residents and businesses.
