TikTok faces the risk of stopping operations in the US again

On July 24, US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick announced that TikTok will have to stop operating in the US if ByteDance (China) does not approve the agreement to sell this application.

According to Reuters, Mr. Lutnick said the US must take full control of TikTok's technology and algorithms.

“China could take a small part or ByteDance, the current owner, could take a small part. But essentially, the Americans would take control. The Americans would own the technology, and the Americans would control the algorithm,” he said.

He also confirmed that if China approves the deal, TikTok will continue to operate. Otherwise, the app will be shut down.

In addition, Attorney General Pam Bondi sent letters to companies like Apple and Google, stating that they would not be held liable if they continued to provide services related to TikTok, citing Mr. Trump's concerns about security and foreign affairs issues if the app was suddenly shut down.

TikTok has yet to make an official response.

According to CNBC, TikTok's future in the US has been uncertain since 2024, when the US Congress passed a bill to ban the platform unless ByteDance divests from the app.

US lawmakers have grown increasingly concerned that the Chinese government could access sensitive data from American users or manipulate content on the platform.

Previously, US President Donald Trump signed a law requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok or cease operations in the US by January 19, 2025. However, Mr. Trump has extended this deadline three times, most recently to September 17, on the grounds of ensuring that it does not affect national security and foreign affairs.

A separate deal was also proposed earlier this year to spin off TikTok into a new US-based company controlled by US investors, but that deal has since stalled due to Chinese opposition, particularly after Mr Trump imposed steep tariffs on Chinese goods.
