K'ho people's woven products

K'Glàng, a student from the Faculty of Tourism at Da Lat University, said that the craft of weaving, along with its products, is an integral part of the Central Highlands Gong Culture Space – a masterpiece of oral tradition and an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The weaving craft and its products are the clearest evidence of the adaptability of the local people to the natural environment. “It is also a bond that connects the community, and simultaneously represents the wisdom of the Central Highlands people. Woven products are developed by the ethnic minority communities of the Central Highlands based on geographical conditions, farming practices, and the function of storing local products… Through the patterns, motifs, colors, and weaving techniques, those knowledgeable about Central Highlands culture can identify which ethnic group owns the woven product and where it resides…”, K'Glàng shared.

Bearing the hallmarks of culture, the woven products of the ethnic minority communities in the Central Highlands have become a part of the community's memory – a repository of traditional cultural values. Artisan Ka Thủy, from Bảo Thuận commune, said: “In the past, the demand for woven items among the K'ho people – an ethnic minority in the Central Highlands – was very high. Besides serving daily life and production, woven products were also used in rituals and beliefs, so they were always sought-after and traded items among the K'ho people. The weaving craft once provided many artisan families with a stable source of income.” “That was the story of the past, when stainless steel, plastic, and polymer handicrafts were very cheap and had not yet appeared in the Central Highlands. Now, artisans don't know who to sell their products to,” K'Glàng added, echoing artisan Ka Thủy. In reality, woven products are still sought after for decorating cafes, restaurants, and tourist areas. Prices for woven products range from 350,000 to 1.5 million VND, depending on the type, size, and craftsmanship. Exceptionally, some baskets were purchased by collectors from Hanoi for 18 million VND. “Of course, baskets priced at 18 million VND must be of the highest artistic quality in weaving,” asserted Mr. Nguyen Quoc Trung, a collector of Central Highlands cultural artifacts. Artisan NTơr Ha Bang, from Dam Rong 4 commune, hopes that the increasing number of people seeking out woven products and being willing to spend a large sum of money to own these Central Highlands handicrafts will help prevent the craft from disappearing.

Aware of this, artisan NTơr Ha Bang constantly seeks to innovate designs, weaving highly practical items to serve as accessories for festivals, alongside creating new designs: decorative items, souvenirs, performance items... which are popular with consumers. Students from the Tourism Faculty of Da Lat University - K'Glàng contribute to spreading this unique cultural feature by filming, editing, and photographing woven products and posting them on social media platforms to promote and help people appreciate and understand more about the people and culture of the Central Highlands. The provincial government has also joined hands to support and create conditions for Central Highlands woven products to be displayed at trade promotion programs and product introduction centers. Weaving artisans are also invited to participate in skill demonstration programs as a way to honor the unique cultural features and encourage dedicated artisans to preserve their craft.
