A clear thawing is occurring in China-Canada relations.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi is preparing to visit Ottawa from May 28-30, the first trip to Canada by a Chinese foreign minister in a decade.

The information was released by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on May 22, shortly after Wang Yi concluded his trip to New York (USA) to chair a high-level meeting of the United Nations Security Council.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said that relations between China and Canada have "taken positive turns" after years of tension and that the two sides are now working towards building a "new model of strategic partnership."

According to Beijing, this visit is expected to help strengthen political trust, expand mutually beneficial cooperation, and manage disagreements to bring China-Canada relations back onto a path of "stability and sustainability."

In January of this year, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney visited Beijing, and the two countries reached a notable trade agreement concerning electric vehicles and canola seeds, including a reduction in some tariffs.

Observers view Prime Minister Mark Carney's trip to China and Foreign Minister Wang Yi's upcoming visit to Canada as a crucial turning point in efforts to mend relations between the two countries after years of diplomatic, trade, and security disagreements that had driven bilateral relations to their lowest point in decades.

Wang Yi's visit is also seen as a crucial test of the ability to rebuild relations between the two major economies in the Asia-Pacific region amidst increasingly complex global geopolitical competition.
