According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Cairo, speaking to the press on May 25, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said that indirect talks with the US in Doha (Qatar) would focus on ending military actions on all fronts and lifting sanctions against Iran.
Mr. Baghaei emphasized that the nuclear issue or the management of the Strait of Hormuz would not be discussed.
Baghaei's remarks come as the Iranian negotiating team, led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, is in Doha for discussions with senior Qatari officials.
According to Iran's state news agency IRNA and PressTV, the Iranian delegation is expected to hold consultations with senior Qatari officials on a number of issues aimed at ending the war against Iran.
Meanwhile, Iran's semi-official Mehr news agency reported that the Iranian delegation was expected to meet with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
Indirect negotiations between Iran and the US, mediated by Pakistan and supported by Qatar, are continuing based on the Islamic Republic of Iran's 14-point proposal to reach a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at ending hostilities.
Earlier, Baghaei said that Iran and the US were closer to finalizing a 14-point memorandum aimed at ending US military actions at sea and ensuring the release of frozen Iranian assets.
On the same day, May 25th, a TTXVN correspondent in Tel Aviv reported that Iran International, citing a source with direct knowledge of the negotiation process, stated on May 24th that Iran is demanding the immediate release of $12 billion in assets frozen in Qatar as a prerequisite for continuing negotiations with the United States.
According to this source, this is currently the only obstacle preventing further negotiations related to an MOU aimed at ending the conflict between the two countries.
The source also emphasized that one of Tehran's broader demands is that all of its frozen assets must be released within the framework of any future comprehensive agreement.
In April, a senior Iranian official said the U.S. had agreed to release frozen Iranian assets being held in Qatar. However, a U.S. official quickly denied this information.
Later, another Iranian source said Washington had approved the release of $6 billion in frozen Tehran assets in Qatar.
