Human kindness overcomes storms and floods.

Over the past few days, Thai Nguyen has been reeling from a historic flood. But amidst the hardship, human kindness shines through, from charitable meal kitchens and calls to each other in the night to hands clasped together to overcome the flood.

Flames of compassion

In recent days, in wards in the central administrative area, such as Quang Vinh and Phan Dinh Phung, rising water levels have submerged many areas. The once bustling streets are now filled only with the sounds of rescue boats and people calling out to each other in the drizzling rain. Many households are isolated, unable to reach by boat, forcing residents to climb ladders over walls to receive bags of rice and bottles of water.

According to preliminary provincial statistics, 5,450 houses were damaged, including 5,096 that were flooded/isolated, and approximately 490 that were urgently evacuated. Water levels at the Gia Bay hydrological station (Cau River) rose very high, at times exceeding the 2024 flood peak by about 1.09m. Prolonged heavy rain, with rainfall exceeding 500mm in some areas, caused landslides on many roads and bridges, disrupting traffic; thousands of hectares of crops were flooded and damaged.

On the night of October 8th, many residents of Duc Xuan ward stayed up all night to wrap nearly 400 sticky rice cakes (banh chung) to send to people in flood-affected areas.

According to Vu Thi Kim Quynh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Duc Xuan Ward: "We just returned from delivering gifts to the southern communes and wards of the province. People are now working together to wrap banh chung (traditional Vietnamese rice cakes) and gather essential supplies to send to flooded areas, including the northern communes. Some contribute boxes of instant noodles, others bring bags of rice; without being told, everyone just works together."

Nguyen Thi My Linh
Nguyen Thi My Linh's group cooked meals to support people affected by the floods.

Ms. Nguyen Thi My Linh (owner of a small eatery in Bac Kan ward) and dozens of other residents cooked hundreds of meals to support people in the flooded areas. Sharing her thoughts with us after returning from a trip to assist people in the southern communes and wards affected by the floods, she said: "Everyone contributed what they could. Some contributed rice, some contributed meat, some contributed labor. We just hope that everyone in the flooded areas can eat enough and have the strength to clean up when the water recedes."

After a sleepless night, Nguyen Thi My Linh's team completed 500 meals consisting of sesame salt, boiled eggs, zucchini, and stir-fried meat, all vacuum-sealed to ensure the best quality.

Those meals traveled dozens of kilometers to communes and wards still submerged in water and mud. Upon returning from the trip, Ms. Linh immediately began calling on people to donate essential supplies to the people in Na Ri commune, which was also severely affected.

In Duc Xuan ward, on September 9-10, 1,600 meals and many other essential supplies were delivered to flood-affected residents, cooked by hundreds of members of the Farmers' Association and Women's Association of the ward.

Ms. La Thi Thuy Hang, an official of the Farmers' Association of Duc Xuan ward, said: "Everyone arrived early, helping each other with preparation and cooking. Everyone had a task. We hope that these small meals will reach everyone, contributing to sharing some of the difficulties that people affected by the flooding are experiencing."

People everywhere are turning their attention to Thai Nguyen.

Nguyen Viet Anh, the leader of the Hope Volunteer Group in Hanoi , arrived in Thai Nguyen early with many essential supplies to support the people. Nguyen Viet Anh and his group directly paddled boats to deliver supplies and helped evacuate many people from deeply flooded areas.

At the same time, many delegations from Bac Giang, Hanoi, Thanh Hoa, and other provinces also came to Thai Nguyen to provide assistance. The images of police officers, soldiers, and militia members wading through the water, carrying elderly people and young children out of the flooded areas, moved everyone who witnessed them to tears.

Many groups of students, youth union members, and young people fanned out across wards and communes, distributing thousands of meals, hundreds of loaves of bread, sticky rice, porridge, and bottled water to the people... with only one desire: to help the people as much as possible.

According to the Thai Nguyen Provincial Fatherland Front Committee, as of October 8th, organizations and individuals nationwide have pledged to support flood victims with a total amount exceeding 798 billion VND, of which 170 billion VND has been transferred to the province's relief account. Relief teams continue to arrive, bringing not only essential supplies but also compassion and love.

Currently, in many areas the floodwaters have receded, and people, along with authorities, are cleaning up, disinfecting, and collecting waste. Many families have focused on cleaning their homes and gradually stabilizing their lives.

The floods will eventually pass, everyone is tired, but their eyes still shine brightly, because they are not alone. And, in the memories of the people of Thai Nguyen, there will forever remain those warm, sleepless nights filled with compassion, the boats laden with life jackets, and bags of bread and milk carrying hope...
