We are talking about Hero of the People's Armed Forces Le Y, currently residing in Vinh Xuan village, Binh Trung commune, Thang Binh district. He said: "My father and my two brothers all sacrificed their lives in the resistance war against the US. I didn't think I could live to see this day."

Quick thinking in defeating the enemy

Hero of the People's Armed Forces Le Y was born in 1948 in Lang An village, Que Long commune, Que Son district. His father, Le Su, was a Party member during the anti-French resistance and died in 1970. His two older brothers, Le Nguyen and Le Nhung, died in 1968 and 1970 respectively. His mother, Ha Thi Quynh, was awarded the title of Heroic Vietnamese Mother.

Mr. Le Y said that the frequent arrests, torture, assassinations, and anti-communist protests by the US-Diem regime fueled his determination to fight for national independence. Once, in 1959, the enemy captured his father, his older brother, and other revolutionaries, tied them to rafters, and subjected them to brutal torture, causing them to repeatedly suffer near-death experiences.

In 1965, following the example of his father and two older brothers, he enthusiastically joined the revolution, working in his local area (then Son Lanh commune). At that time, his brothers had already joined the army, so Le Y joined the local guerrilla forces. In 1966, during an enemy sweep operation, when enemy tanks advanced towards Doc Mon, he and his comrades shot and killed many enemy soldiers. An M113 armored vehicle was hit by gunfire and had to turn around and flee.

In early 1967, American troops landed at Cam Doi to establish a base and launched fierce bombing and raids on the surrounding areas to protect it. Le Y and other guerrilla teams organized a perimeter to eliminate the Americans around the western side of the Cam Doi base. Le Y creatively repurposed unexploded artillery shells and bombs from the enemy into mines, arranging them in a line to attack the enemy.

Mr. Le Y was awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces by the President of Vietnam on July 26, 2012. He was also awarded the First Class Military Merit Medal; 5 Badges of Heroic Fighter Against the Americans; and 3 Badges of Heroic Fighter Against Mechanized Vehicles.

On March 20, 1967, a platoon of 30 American soldiers infiltrated the Lãnh An area, setting up camp for the night at the foot of the hill. Under the command of Political Commissar Nguyễn Dinh and Deputy Commander Lê Thị Phòng, the guerrilla teams divided into three groups to approach the enemy. At 1:00 AM on March 21, all three guerrilla teams simultaneously threw grenades, launching a surprise attack that completely wiped out the American platoon and seized two weapons.

On April 10, 1967, a US platoon was positioned in the Hon Chai area, and Le Y and his comrades killed two of them. On March 29, 1968, a US company advanced to the Doc Mon area, and Le Y followed the stream bank to eliminate two more enemy soldiers. When the enemy opened fire, Le Y cleverly retreated along the stream to the village. Continuously from 1967 to 1969, Le Y eliminated many enemy soldiers by manufacturing bombs and mines from captured weapons.

Mr. Le Y recalled that on the morning of October 9, 1970, he and key officials of the commune were in the house of Mrs. Ly Thi Duc when the Americans suddenly attacked. Without time to hide, Le Y quickly shot and killed an enemy soldier in front of the house, then neutralized the one blocking the rear, and shot down several more to create a path for the six officials to escape the enemy's encirclement.

Many achievements

Now 77 years old, Mr. Le Y still clearly remembers the battles. He recounted that in 1971, the enemy continuously swept through the Son Lanh commune area. He and his comrades planted many mines in the gardens, killing 22 enemy soldiers from the 3rd Division while searching for secret tunnels. In total, in 1971, Commune Militia Commander Le Y and his comrades eliminated nearly 100 enemy soldiers.

In 1972, Mr. Le Y, along with the local armed forces, contributed to the resounding victory at Cam Doi alongside the main forces of Military Region 5. Mr. Le Y stated that the victory at Cam Doi marked the maturity of the local armed forces and elevated the revolutionary movement of the people of Que Son to a new level.

In 1973, Le Y and his comrades eliminated dozens of soldiers from the 3rd Division. He also mobilized the people to collect enemy grenades to hand over to the guerrillas and supplied rice and food to help the guerrillas and local armed forces fight the enemy.

On July 21, 1974, when the main army attacked Hon Chien, Le Y commanded the Son Lanh guerrilla unit to attack the Nha Tam resettlement area, killing 14 insurgents; capturing the village chief and 53 insurgents and civil defense personnel; seizing 24 weapons; dismantling the resettlement area, and relocating 280 people to the liberated zone.

From 1969 to 1975, Le Y directly commanded guerrilla units; established connections and built bases; and mobilized young people to return to liberated areas to join the guerrillas and the army.

During the period from 1965 to 1975, Mr. Le Y participated in 43 coordinated battles; fought independently, eliminating 356 enemy soldiers; persuaded 5 to surrender; seized 32 weapons; damaged 14 tanks and armored vehicles; and shot down 1 aircraft.

Recounting his heroic deeds, hero Le Y emotionally remembered his comrades who sacrificed their lives in the battles. He said: "The brutal war is over. I only hope that the younger generation will always strive to build a more prosperous and beautiful homeland."
