Xuan Son: 'It's okay, I'm about to get to eat pho and fried bananas.'

As Thanh Nien newspaper reported, last night, Nguyen Xuan Son underwent surgery lasting nearly an hour and a half to treat a broken leg sustained in the second leg of the 2024 AFF Cup final. Professor Tran Trung Dung stated that the surgery was successful.

He shared: "Basically, this is a fairly serious injury: two very large, separate fractures, one 3 cm and one 7 cm. We want to help him recover as quickly as possible. Regarding the bone injury, we performed intramedullary nailing, without opening the fracture site. Essentially, we preserved the anatomical structure, preventing displacement of the fractured fragments, and there was no need to open the fracture site. Therefore, the surgery lasted longer than usual, approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes."

The surgical procedure was monitored using ultrasound and CT scans, ensuring that the anatomical requirements for correction and fixation were met. To date, the surgery has been successful. After the surgery, the patient will regain consciousness and be immediately taken back to their room for treatment. This includes cold therapy and localized massage and exercise. On January 7th, the patient will be able to begin mobility training using crutches or a wheelchair. Following this, they will go to the Vinmec Sports Medicine Orthopedics and Traumatology Unit for training with specialized equipment.

Nam Dinh team owner Nguyen Van Thien visited Xuan Son immediately after he left the operating room. He said that the best rehabilitation methods would be applied.

“Xuan Son has dedicated himself wholeheartedly to Vietnam and deserves to be honored. Son must return soon and continue to wear the Vietnamese national team jersey,” he said. Son thanked Chairman Thien and the fans for always being by his side during this difficult time. He even sang the Vietnamese national anthem, making his wife laugh. “It’s okay. Son will be back soon,” Xuan Son confidently shared.

Coach Vu Hong Viet and Technical Director Nguyen Trung Kien advised Son to take care of his diet. They warned him not to eat pho or banana cake to avoid gaining weight. In response, Son jokingly said, "No way, pho and banana cake are delicious."
