This is a cultural and artistic event that honors cinematic works of high artistic value, rich in humanistic values, and bearing outstanding and unique creative imprints from both international and Vietnamese sources; it is also a practical way to celebrate the country's major holidays in 2024 and commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of Hanoi (October 10, 1954 - October 10, 2024).
HANIFF discovers and honors new talents in cinema; introduces outstanding works from film industries around the world ; and fosters connections, exchanges, and cooperation for mutual development, creating opportunities to expand the Vietnamese film market and integrate into the international film market.
The event contributes to promoting the beautiful and hospitable country of Vietnam, with its capital Hanoi boasting a long-standing cultural tradition, a rich history of a thousand years of civilization, and a thriving development that has been recognized by UNESCO as a Creative City.
According to the organizers, this year's HANIFF is expected to attract approximately 800 delegates and guests from Vietnam and abroad, including Party and State leaders; representatives from relevant ministries, departments, agencies, and units; outstanding film artists; and film activists from Vietnam and internationally.
From over 500 films submitted, the 7th HANIFF selected 117 feature films and short films from 51 countries and territories to participate in the event's programs. Notably, 9 films were featured in the film program celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of Hanoi.
The opening and closing ceremonies – including the awards presentation – were held at the Ho Guom Theatre (40 Hang Bai Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi). The concept for these two events drew inspiration from traditional folk art interwoven with iconic modern architectural landmarks of Hanoi, creating a vibrant and energetic atmosphere suitable for an international film festival. The overall imagery exuded a profound East Asian spirit, combining traditional Vietnamese elements with the elegant and refined aesthetics of Hanoians.
Within the framework of HANIFF 2024, many diverse activities will take place, such as the exhibition "Vietnam's UNESCO-recognized Heritage Sites - Experiencing Through Cinematic Films"; the workshop "Focus on German Cinema"; the workshop "Developing Film Production Exploring Historical Themes and Adaptations from Literary Works"; a Film Project Market; a program of tours of several historical sites and scenic spots in Hanoi; and film screenings at theaters and outdoors.
