This year, Tong Sanh grows about 50 hectares of melons.

With 0.8 hectares of melons, large and quite even fruit, high selling price, ranging from 15,000 VND - 20,000 VND/kg, this crop, Mr. Chao Lao San's family estimated to earn over 100 million VND. "If we could spread tarps, it would be better. Last year, due to drought, there were no fruits, few and small fruits, this year the melons are bigger," said Mr. Chao Lao San, Chu Cang Ho village, Tong Sanh commune, Bat Xat district.

To sustainably develop watermelon growing in Tong Sanh, people have formed production groups with similar interests. Here, farmers exchange and share experiences in planting, caring for, and harvesting fruits according to recommendations from professional sectors, which is convenient for production and consumption of products. "After receiving guidance from the Department of Agriculture , I then instructed everyone in the watermelon growing group in Chu Cang Ho. All watermelon growing households are added to Zalo and Facebook groups to share experiences there," said Ms. Lo Lo May, Chu Cang Ho village, Tong Sanh commune, Bat Xat district.

According to the plan, this year, Tong Sanh planted about 25 hectares of melons, but when supported with seeds and fertilizers, many households boldly registered to plant, bringing the total area of this crop to 50 hectares. Not only watermelons, but also local cucumber varieties were brought into cultivation; it is estimated that this year, Tong Sanh farmers harvested about 1,000 tons of fruit, worth nearly 1 billion 250 million VND. "When the melons bear fruit, people know how to use tools to prop up the melons, turn them around so that the melons can synthesize light and accumulate sugar inside the melons, so the quality of the melons is better and sweeter than melons of previous years," said Ms. Pham Thi Thuy, agricultural extension worker of Tong Sanh commune, Bat Xat district.

Watermelon is sold by people at prices ranging from 15,000 VND - 20,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Chao Lao Lo, Chairman of the People's Committee of Tong Sanh Commune, Bat Xat District said: "Watermelon is a source of income in the area. In the coming time, the commune will specifically evaluate the productivity after harvest so that in the following years, the commune will orient and encourage people to continue planting more, contributing to increasing income for the people."

Identifying melon as a key crop, the Party Committee and government encourage the application of technical processes in cultivation, improving productivity and product quality, creating good income for farmers; at the same time, striving to make watermelon a local OCOP product.
