German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife will pay a state visit to Vietnam next week, at the invitation of President Vo Van Thuong and his wife.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife will visit on January 23-24, according to a statement released today by the Foreign Office.
Vietnam and Germany established diplomatic relations on September 23, 1975. Since then, the friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries have developed positively, becoming increasingly deep, effective, and comprehensive. During the visit of then-German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Vietnam in October 2011, the two countries established a Strategic Partnership.
Germany is Vietnam's largest trading partner in Europe, accounting for nearly 20% of Vietnam's exports to the European Union (EU), and is also an important transit gateway for Vietnamese goods to other European markets. Bilateral trade turnover in 2023 reached over US$11 billion.

Currently, there are over 350 German businesses operating in Vietnam. As of May 2023, Germany had 444 active projects with a total registered investment capital of over US$2.36 billion, ranking fourth in the EU and 18th among 143 countries and territories investing in Vietnam.
Vietnamese businesses have 11 active investment projects in Germany with a total investment capital (including adjustments) exceeding US$30.95 million.
Germany is one of the largest and most consistent providers of Official Development Assistance (ODA) to Vietnam, with over $2 billion allocated to ODA projects since 1990. Since 2020, Vietnam has been classified as a "Global Partner" in Germany's Development Cooperation Strategy to 2030 (BMZ 2030).
