On May 27, a chemical leak occurred at a US military base in Stuttgart, Germany, and residents in the area were advised to stay indoors.

In a social media post, the U.S. military base in Stuttgart stated that the incident occurred at Building 3165 in the Panzer Housing Complex.

Workers discovered a leak of liquid chlorine around midday and immediately notified the fire department. Firefighters from Boeblingen, along with firefighters from the military base, quickly arrived to handle the situation.

The state of emergency and travel restrictions have been lifted after authorities confirmed the chemical leak was successfully contained.

Currently, firefighters from the base and environmental protection experts are still on the scene to handle the collected materials.

The building where the incident occurred is located in a military family housing complex in Panzer Kaserne and near the Youth Sports & Fitness office of the Center for Children and Youth Services.

Military officials said all the school-aged children at the center were in a different building within the Panzer Kaserne complex at the time of the incident.

Chlorine is a chemical commonly used in water treatment systems and industrial cleaning. Exposure to chlorine can cause irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract; in severe cases, it can lead to serious respiratory problems.
