Russian President Vladimir Putin (front) arrives in Beijing, beginning his state visit to China on May 19, 2026. |
Ahead of Russian President Putin's state visit to China, Chinese media outlets such as Xinhua News Agency, People's Daily, and Global Times have published numerous commentaries, expressing expectations that the visit will elevate bilateral relations to a new, deeper level; and that cooperation in various fields will continuously expand, bringing tangible benefits to the people of both countries.
According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, this is President Putin's 25th visit to China.
During the visit, the two heads of state will exchange views on bilateral relations, cooperation in various fields, as well as international and regional issues of mutual concern.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that in recent years, under the strategic leadership of President Xi Jinping and President Putin, the new-era comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Russia has developed deeply, healthily, and stably. Cooperation in various fields has continuously expanded, bringing tangible benefits to the people of both countries and making important contributions to maintaining global strategic stability.
Mr. Guo Jiakun stated that this year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the China-Russia Strategic Partnership and the 25th anniversary of the signing of the China-Russia Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, and the launch of the "China-Russia Education Year".
Both sides will seize this opportunity to further deepen Sino-Russian relations, adding more stability and positive energy to the world.
Li Yongquan, Chairman of the Academic Committee at the Eurasian Institute for Social Development under the Development Research Center of the State Council of China, stated that the most important achievement of Sino-Russian relations over the past 30 years has been finding a path for the coexistence of major powers.
At the core of this path is the principle of non-alignment, non-confrontation, and non-targeting of third parties, as embodied in the "Treaty of Friendly Neighborliness and Cooperation between China and Russia" signed in 2001.
These principles have been highly successful in Sino-Russian relations, and extending them to relations with other major powers will lead to the construction of a multipolar world in the future.
Meanwhile, Li Ziguo, Director of the Eurasian Studies Institute at the China Institute of International Studies, stated that China and Russia are important and irreplaceable partners, for example in energy security, food security, and transportation security.
The level of mutual understanding and trust between the people of the two countries has reached unprecedented levels. Approximately 80% of people in China and Russia consider each other to be friendly nations.
The two countries have organized National Years, Language Years, and Tourism Years… and are currently implementing an Education Year. Last year, they launched a bilateral visa exemption system, facilitating people-to-people exchanges.
In the economic and trade sphere, China has maintained its position as Russia's largest trading partner for 16 consecutive years.
According to the latest figures released by China's Ministry of Commerce, trade between China and Russia is projected to reach $227.9 billion in 2025, surpassing the $200 billion mark for the third consecutive year.
In the first four months of this year, bilateral trade between China and Russia reached $85.241 billion, a 19.7% increase compared to the same period last year.
Cooperation in key areas has been strengthened and become more practical; cooperation between localities of the two countries continues to develop strongly; emerging fields such as connectivity, artificial intelligence, aerospace, green economy and cross-border e-commerce are all developing rapidly...
Bilateral cooperation is shifting from a quantitative accumulation to a qualitative leap.

Meanwhile, with the implementation of the visa-free policy between China and Russia, people-to-people exchanges between the two countries have become increasingly vibrant, and the fields of education, culture, and tourism have also been strengthened.
Chinese media emphasized that, in the coming period, China and Russia have a responsibility to continue to maintain the spirit of enduring friendly neighborliness, comprehensive strategic coordination and mutually beneficial cooperation, seize historical opportunities, maintain close high-level exchanges, and strengthen practical cooperation in various fields.
Through deeper strategic coordination and a more proactive and responsible approach as major powers, ensuring that Sino-Russian relations continue to develop in the right direction will contribute to promoting "Sino-Russian energy" in building a multipolar world and maintaining global strategic stability.
