Tottenham are set to bring striker Timo Werner back to the Premier League, 16 months after he left Chelsea.
The North London club is loaning Werner from RB Leipzig to bolster their attack for the remainder of the season. The German international will arrive in London today, January 7th, for a medical examination, after being given permission by RB Leipzig to leave their training camp in La Manga, Spain.

Werner did not participate in the friendly match on January 6th, when RB Leipzig beat St Gallen 1-0. The German team's coach, Marco Rose, confirmed: "This is the right time for Timo to leave on loan. He wants to compete for a place in the Euro 2024 squad. We wish him all the best and hope that misfortune stays away from him."
Werner has made 14 appearances this season, mostly from the bench, and scored two goals. Despite not having a regular place at RB Leipzig, Werner remains in high demand. Manchester United and Aston Villa are also reportedly interested in bringing the 27-year-old forward in January.
According to the Daily Mail , Tottenham have agreed to pay Werner's salary for the remainder of the season, estimated at around $5.73 million. Additionally, the German striker's contract includes a release clause worth $18.45 million.
Many doubted the success of this signing, given Werner's unsuccessful Premier League stint with Chelsea. However, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou believed Werner's speed, discipline, and commitment to the team would suit his tactics.
Tottenham will be without Son Heung-min for about a month as the striker returns to play for South Korea at the Asian Cup. Therefore, with Werner, Postecoglou wants another option in attack. However, defense remains the top priority for the Australian manager. Tottenham are likely to bring in a central defender this month and are in negotiations to sign Romanian defender Radu Dragusin from Genoa for $28 million.
Werner moved from RB Leipzig to Chelsea in 2020 for $60 million. At the time, he was a prolific goalscorer in the Bundesliga and was expected to shine in England. However, Werner failed to adapt to the new environment. He scored 23 goals in 89 games, but that wasn't enough to satisfy Chelsea. In 2022, the Stamford Bridge club suffered a significant loss when they let Werner return to RB Leipzig for just $23 million plus add-ons. Upon returning to Germany, Werner still couldn't regain his form and lost his starting place to strikers Benjamin Sesko and Lois Openda.
