Tottenham cannot yet rest easy about avoiding relegation. |
The result leaves Spurs still living in anxiety, even though the gap with the relegation zone has temporarily widened. Spurs are 17th with 38 points, two points ahead of West Ham, but clearly cannot rest easy. The final two matches against Chelsea and Everton will decide whether they can avoid their first relegation disaster since 1977.
Following West Ham's defeat to Arsenal the previous day, Tottenham entered the match with a great opportunity to secure a comfortable lead. A win would have put Roberto De Zerbi's side four points clear of the relegation zone with only two rounds remaining. However, psychological pressure once again caused Spurs to squander this opportunity.
Tottenham Hotspur started the match feeling very tense. A series of defensive errors nearly cost them dearly in the first half. Antonin Kinsky had to make several saves, most notably a spectacular save against Sean Longstaff's shot in injury time.
Nevertheless, Tottenham still had a moment of brilliance thanks to Mathys Tel. Early in the second half, the young French talent controlled the ball neatly before unleashing a beautiful curling shot to open the scoring, igniting the North London crowd. The goal seemed poised to secure a crucial victory for Spurs.
But it was also Tel who caused his team to lose their advantage. In the 74th minute, while attempting a bicycle kick to clear the ball, he accidentally kicked Ethan Ampadu inside the penalty area. After consulting VAR, referee Jarred Gillett awarded Leeds a penalty, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin didn't miss the opportunity to equalize the score at 1-1.
In the final minutes, Tottenham played in a state of panic. Leeds were even closer to victory if Kinsky hadn't made a superb save. Spurs also appealed for a penalty when James Maddison fell in the penalty area, but VAR denied it.
