Planning for 8 railway lines in the hub area.

The Vietnam Railway Authority is seeking broad public feedback on the mid-term report on the Planning of Railway Lines and Stations in the Ho Chi Minh City Railway Hub area, prepared by the Joint Venture of Southern Transport Design and Consulting Company (TEDI SOUTH) and the Center for Investment and Development Consulting in Transport (CCTDI).

Accordingly, eight railway lines will be planned in the Ho Chi Minh City hub area, including: Trang Bom - Saigon (Hoa Hung) - Tan Kien; Bien Hoa - Vung Tau; Ho Chi Minh City - Loc Ninh; Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho ; North-South High-Speed Railway (Thu Thiem - Long Thanh Airport section); Thu Thiem - Long Thanh; Ho Chi Minh City - Tay Ninh; and a railway connecting Hiep Phuoc Port and Long An Port.

Regarding infrastructure, investment will focus on upgrading and renovating to ensure train safety and gradually bring the existing Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City railway line to the required technical standards, in order to maximize the leading role of railway transport for passengers and goods; and to align with the approved railway network plan.

Consultants are preparing a plan for railway lines and stations in the Ho Chi Minh City railway hub area, proposing a plan for 8 railway lines and 7 main stations, with Saigon (Hoa Hung) station as the central station (Image: illustration).

Research, investment, and commencement of construction of new railway lines and stations, including ring railways and lines connecting major seaports, will meet the requirements for railway transport capacity as well as the ability to operate and connect railway lines in the hub area, creating a foundation for gradually transforming the function of national railway sections in urban areas such as: the North-South high-speed railway line (Nha Trang - Ho Chi Minh City section); the Bien Hoa - Vung Tau line connecting to Thi Vai and Cai Mep ports; the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho line; the Ho Chi Minh City - Loc Ninh line; the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh line...

The vision for 2050 is to essentially complete the railway network in the Ho Chi Minh City hub, ensuring seamless, safe, and efficient connectivity between railway lines. Simultaneously, it aims to provide convenient connections with other modes of transport and key economic centers in the Southern region, as well as other economic centers nationwide.

Regarding infrastructure, complete the upgrading and renovation of the existing North-South railway line. Complete the construction of new lines along the North-South and East-West corridors, and lines connecting major seaports in Ho Chi Minh City, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Dong Nai, and Long An.

7 main stations, with separate lanes for freight and passenger trains.

In the plan, the consultant proposed five central/main passenger stations. Of these, Saigon/Hoa Hung station would be the city's central passenger station, with radial passenger trains operating in a "pendulum" fashion, passing through the central station via An Binh - Binh Trieu - Saigon - Tan Kien.

Saigon Station is also the central station for various types of passenger trains: North-South (when the high-speed railway connects to the hub area via the Trang Bom - Hoa Hung railway line or the Bien Hoa - Vung Tau railway line), intercity passenger trains, local (regional) passenger trains, and suburban-inner-out trains. There are no facilities for repairing and maintaining locomotives and carriages in the station area due to a lack of available land.

An Binh station is the main passenger terminal in the northern part of the city; Binh Trieu station is for passengers boarding and alighting; and Tan Kien station is the main passenger terminal in the southern part of the city.

The two main passenger stations, An Binh and Tan Kien, have locomotive and carriage repair and maintenance facilities located at opposite ends outside the central area. They operate "pendulum" type trains via the central passenger station, Saigon/Hoa Hung, for intercity, interregional, and suburban passenger trains. In addition, Tan Kien station serves as the starting and ending point for high-speed rail on the North-South axis.

Thu Thiem Station is the eastern passenger station of the city, serving as the pick-up and drop-off point for passengers on the North-South high-speed railway.

Trang Bom station is proposed to be planned as the main cargo station (Photo: Trang Bom station currently specializes in loading and unloading goods).

For central/main freight stations, the consultant proposes planning An Binh station as the central station, for freight train operation, throughput, de-docking, and dismantling of trains heading in all directions for the entire railway network of the Ho Chi Minh City railway hub; simultaneously serving as the main freight station for Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong province; with the orientation of a station combining international intermodal functions.

Trang Bom Station is a freight station located in the northern part of the railway hub (including facilities for repairing, maintaining, and servicing locomotives and freight cars); it serves as a freight transfer station between narrow-gauge and standard-gauge railways, and participates in multimodal transport from Trang Bom ICD to the Thi Vai - Vung Tau deep-water port complex.

Tan Kien Station is both a passenger and cargo station in the southern part of the transportation hub. It's the station where goods from the North, Tay Ninh, and Can Tho are transported before being distributed to the inner city areas (via road transport) to meet the needs of the entire city.

Thanh Duc Station is a freight station serving industrial zones in Ben Luc District and Long An Province, and connects to the dedicated railway line to Hiep Phuoc Port (Nha Be District, Ho Chi Minh City) and Long An Port (Can Giuoc District, Long An Province).

Regarding transportation organization, the consultant proposed that freight and passenger transportation in the hub area be planned in a highly specialized manner, separating freight and passenger train flows: Freight transport will approach via the ring road, while passenger transport will approach towards the center.

Specifically, freight trains entering the railway hub will run along the ring railway (parallel to Ring Road 2 - the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho route); connecting the North-South high-speed railway freight trains to the Ho Chi Minh City railway hub via the Trang Bom station.

Passenger trains serving the city's residents will be planned to be located deep within the city center for convenient access: Organizing high-speed North-South railway trains connecting Thu Thiem and Tan Kien stations through the southern part of the city; Organizing inter-suburban, inter-regional/local, and intercity passenger trains through the central Saigon/Hoa Hung station.
