Recently, Ho Chi Minh City has trimmed the sidewalks at some intersections and added lane markings to open right turns. These changes initially helped reduce traffic congestion and were supported by many people.
Regarding this issue, a representative of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction said that the city is currently implementing two parallel approaches.
One is to trim the sidewalk, narrow the island to open more right turns, helping vehicles escape faster.
Second, draw a lane marker to create a continuous right turn lane, avoiding the situation where a vehicle going straight stops and blocks the turn.
This is considered a long-term solution, suitable for the crowded traffic situation of Ho Chi Minh City.
Regarding the sidewalk trimming method, the Department of Construction requires relevant units to carefully review and ensure that the mandatory regulation is that the pedestrian walkway must be at least 1.5m wide. A typical example is the turn at the Kha Van Can intersection - Road No. 2 (old Thu Duc City) which was just opened on September 28.
According to the records, traffic conditions have become more favorable, there is no longer the scene of vehicles climbing the curb causing damage like before. The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction added that sidewalk surveys are always done carefully to both open traffic and ensure safety for pedestrians and people with disabilities.
Through evaluation, the sidewalk trimming and arrangement of continuous right-turn lanes have brought about clear results, reducing the number of vehicles waiting at traffic lights, helping traffic flow more smoothly.
In the coming time, Ho Chi Minh City will continue to survey and trim sidewalks at intersections with adequate infrastructure, combining lane adjustments and educating people to comply with traffic laws.
Ho Chi Minh City has deployed 14 consecutive right-turn points using the grid pattern, of which 7 points are for all vehicles (Pham Van Dong - Phan Van Tri, Cach Mang Thang 8 - Dien Bien Phu , Le Duan - Ton Duc Thang...) and 7 points are reserved for motorbikes (Nguyen Trai - Nguyen Tri Phuong, Pasteur - Ly Tu Trong, An Duong Vuong - Nguyen Tri Phuong...). The city has also installed more than 790 signs, 800 sets of traffic lights and will continue to expand in the fourth quarter of 2025.
