On the morning of December 31st, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction held a ceremony to inaugurate and put into use the bicycle lane on Mai Chi Tho Street (section from Nguyen Co Thach Street to D1 Street). At the ceremony, leaders of the Department of Construction and delegates directly cycled along the newly completed route.
Mr. Vo Khanh Hung, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, stated that bicycles are a suitable means of connecting with public transportation such as buses and metros. The creation of dedicated bicycle lanes is one of the solutions aimed at limiting the use of private vehicles and promoting green and sustainable transportation.

According to Mr. Vo Khanh Hung, Mai Chi Tho road is a vital transportation artery, passing through many large urban areas and apartment complexes such as Sala, New City, The Sun Avenue… and is a place with very high demand for short-distance travel between residential areas and service points. It also connects to the future Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien, Ben Thanh - Thu Thiem, and Thu Thiem - Long Thanh metro lines.
"Organizing separate bicycle lanes amidst green spaces makes it easier for people to access the metro, buses, and other public transportation, thereby improving the efficiency of urban transportation infrastructure," Mr. Hung emphasized.
The bicycle lane is 5.7km long and 2m wide (1.5m wide for the section over the bridge), with a design speed of 20km/h. It starts at the Mai Chi Tho - Nguyen Co Thach intersection and ends at the Mai Chi Tho - D1 road intersection. The road surface uses asphalt concrete with a maximum slope of 4%; parking areas, bicycle stations, lighting systems, and drainage systems are also being invested in simultaneously.

According to the Department of Construction, this is only phase 1 of the project; phase 2 will be implemented after evaluating the actual operational efficiency and when the An Phu interchange is completed.
In the near future, Ho Chi Minh City plans to expand its network of dedicated bicycle lanes to connect commercial centers, office buildings, parks, and historical landmarks, while also enhancing connectivity with the public transport system and terminal infrastructure.
The routes currently under study for implementation are Nguyen Van Cu, Tran Hung Dao, Le Loi, Nguyen Hue, Ham Nghi, Ton Duc Thang, Dong Khoi, Cong Xa Paris, Le Duan, Pham Ngoc Thach, Ben Van Don, Hoang Sa, Truong Sa, Dien Bien Phu, Vo Van Kiet, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Nguyen Huu Canh, Dinh Tien Hoang, and Vo Nguyen Giap.
