According to the Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, the city's public high school entrance exam will consist of three subjects: Mathematics, Literature, and a third subject: Foreign Language.
Immediately after the Ministry of Education and Training issued the Circular on the Regulations for Admission to Junior High Schools and High Schools, on the afternoon of January 8th, in an exchange with the press, Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, stated that the city's public high school entrance exam will consist of three subjects: Mathematics, Literature, and a third subject: Foreign Language.
The exam is expected to be held in early June 2025. The structure, assessment requirements, and cognitive ability level scale of the exam were announced by the Department in early October 2024. Specifically, the Literature and Mathematics exams will have a time limit of 120 minutes, while the Foreign Language exam will have a time limit of 90 minutes.
Specifically, to meet the requirements and objectives of evaluating subjects according to the 2018 General Education Program, this year's exam structure has been changed and adjusted accordingly. In particular, the number of practical problems in Mathematics has been adjusted; the structure of the Literature exam has been changed; and the English exam includes new questions on writing phrases. The knowledge tested in the exam is within the lower secondary school curriculum, mainly focusing on grades 8 and 9.
The Literature exam consists of two parts: Reading comprehension of literary texts and essay writing (5 points, 3 points for the reading comprehension question and 2 points for the essay writing question); Reading comprehension of argumentative or informational texts and writing a social commentary essay (5 points, 1 point for the reading comprehension question and 4 points for the social commentary essay writing question). Last year, the structure of the Literature exam consisted of three parts: Reading comprehension, social commentary, and literary analysis.
For Mathematics, the exam consists of 7 questions covering the following sections: Geometry and Measurement, Numbers and Algebra, Statistics and Probability. Compared to last year, the exam has one less question on practical problems; and a new type of practical problem related to probability and statistics has been added.
The English exam consists of 4 sections with 40 questions. Aimed at assessing language proficiency, the exam not only tests students' memorized grammar and vocabulary but also their ability to understand and apply the language in appropriate contexts.
Compared to previous years, the exam includes two new questions on writing appropriate phrases based on given information. This question tests the ability to read dictionary annotations to find linguistic information and apply knowledge.
Earlier, on the morning of January 8th, the Ministry of Education and Training issued a Circular on the Regulations for Admission to Junior High Schools and High Schools, applicable from 2025. A notable new point in these regulations is the general provision for the entrance examination method consisting of 3 subjects, with the selection of a third subject (besides the two common subjects, Mathematics and Literature) being chosen by the locality (from among subjects with graded assessments); at the same time, ensuring that the same third subject is not chosen for more than 3 consecutive years.
Previously, the entrance exam for 10th grade in public schools was independently conducted by local authorities, who decided on the number and selection of subjects. 2025 marks the first year the 10th grade entrance exam will be held under the new general education program, so the new regulations include many changes to align with the new curriculum. Many parents and students are eagerly awaiting official information about the exam, especially regarding the selection of a third subject, so they can focus their studies and preparation accordingly.
