Sustainable Poverty Reduction Station

Actively transforming the structure of crops and livestock, selecting and building appropriate agricultural and forestry economic models that bring high economic value and sustainable development is a solution that Tram Than commune, Phu Ninh district, has been implementing. Through this, not only has income been increased, but sustainable poverty reduction has also been contributed to, creating a solid foundation for building advanced new rural areas.

The tree nursery of Mr. Tran Trong Hieu's family in Zone 1, Tram Than commune, produces nearly 1 million seedlings of various types each year, generating an average income of over 100 million VND per year.

With agriculture as the foundation for economic development, the Party Committee and the commune government have developed plans and re-planned production areas with the goal of developing towards a commodity-based economy. Simultaneously, they have focused resources on building infrastructure to support production; actively transforming the structure of crops and livestock, introducing high-quality plant and animal breeds into production. Exploiting the advantage of the vast hilly areas, the commune encourages households to boost livestock farming, shifting towards increasing the scale of livestock and poultry herds. Currently, the commune has a total herd of nearly 200 buffaloes and cows, over 6,000 pigs, and nearly 60,000 poultry and waterfowl... providing households with a stable source of income. In addition, the commune focuses on developing tea cultivation with over 90 hectares, yielding an average of 50-60 quintals/hectare.

In particular, the commune's seedling production industry has brought significant economic benefits and created jobs for farmers. The main types of seedlings grown are eucalyptus, acacia, teak, mahogany, pine, bodhi, cinnamon, etc. The entire commune has over 200 households engaged in seedling production, with each household selling an average of one million seedlings of various types annually, providing regular employment for about 4-5 workers, with an income of 4-5 million VND per month. Mr. Tran Trong Hieu, owner of Hieu Linh seedling nursery in Zone 1, said: “Recognizing the increasing demand for forestry seedlings in the area and neighboring localities, my wife and I borrowed from the Social Policy Bank to establish a forestry seedling nursery. Through research and learning from many practical models in the commune and scientific and technical documents, our nursery now generates an income of over 100 million VND per year.”

The seedling nursery business is thriving and providing a stable income for households in Tram Than commune.

Every year, the People's Committee of Tram Than commune actively coordinates with functional agencies of the district and province to organize training courses on the transfer of scientific and technical knowledge; organizes consultation sessions, career guidance and orientation for the people; and regularly disseminates information to the people on new policies and guidelines of the Party and State, as well as effective production models. At the same time, it facilitates people's access to preferential loans to develop sustainable economic models.

In addition, the commune always pays attention to creating favorable conditions for businesses inside and outside the commune to invest in production and business in the area with main industries: mechanics, wood production, civil carpentry, garment making, construction... The entire commune currently has over 200 regularly employed workers participating in industrial production, handicrafts, trade and services.

Thanks to the application of innovative solutions in economic restructuring, effective exploitation of local strengths, and promotion of commodity production, the material and spiritual lives of the people in the commune have been gradually improved; the average income currently reaches nearly 52 million VND/person/year.

Comrade Le The Cuong, Chairman of the People's Committee of the commune, said: "With the efforts of the Party committee and the government, along with the unity and solidarity of the people, the poverty rate in the commune has continuously decreased year by year. Currently, the poverty rate is only 0.9%. In the coming time, Tram Than will continue to mobilize all resources, effectively implement policies to support the people; strengthen propaganda work, inspire patriotic emulation, encourage active labor and creativity, and develop family economies; contributing to the successful achievement of the local sustainable poverty reduction goals."
