Poor form of Que Ngoc Hai
The Vietnamese team has failed to keep a clean sheet in 13 consecutive matches in the past year. In the match against India, despite only facing an opponent ranked 126th in the world (10 places below Vietnam), coach Kim Sang-sik's team continued to concede goals. Among them, there was a mistake by captain Que Ngoc Hai.
The 1993-born centre-back missed a penalty kick in the 12th minute, causing the Vietnamese team to miss the opportunity to take the lead and dominate the game. In the beginning of the second half, Ngoc Hai made a mistake in choosing the landing point, allowing the opponent to easily pass and then lift the ball over goalkeeper Nguyen Filip. In this situation, the Vietnamese team captain did not proactively move up to the offside trap with his teammates. In the one-on-one situation, he misjudged the direction of the ball and did not maintain his balance well enough to make things difficult for the Indian striker.
Que Ngoc Hai missed a penalty kick against India
Although he made his mark in Bui Vi Hao's goal when he fought fiercely, causing the ball to bounce around the penalty area for his teammate to score, overall, this was still a bad match for Ngoc Hai.
The central defender currently playing for Binh Duong Club was a cornerstone under coach Park Hang-seo. His ability to read situations, choose blocking positions, fight in the air, and command the defense makes Ngoc Hai the perfect solution in the center of a 3-center-back defense.
The "sling" role in a three-man defense is very suitable for a center-back who tends to cover situations and cover like Ngoc Hai. Because there are two "sweeping" center-backs in front who are tasked with one-on-one competition and marking, Ngoc Hai will drop deep to judge and observe.
Under coach Philippe Troussier, although the defensive style of play has changed as the central defenders have to pass the ball to attack more, proactively move up to anticipate situations, Ngoc Hai still fulfills his role well. Unfortunately for the 31-year-old central defender, injury has caused him to miss most of the important matches.
However, when coach Kim Sang-sik rebuilt the defense, the challenge was facing Ngoc Hai, because the requirements for the central defenders had changed. At some points, the captain of the Vietnamese team swapped positions with Thanh Binh to move to the right wing, making it easier to support the attack. The pass to Ngoc Quang to finish dangerously on the right wing was an example.
Ngoc Hai needs to regain his form
However, when changing positions, having to stick and compete more fiercely, constantly pushing up to catch people and keep distance from the front line, Ngoc Hai could not adapt well. Ngoc Hai's ball sense was also unstable, when he had relatively basic bad passes or missed clearances.
This is the consequence of a long period of sporadic injury breaks from 2023 until now. Ngoc Hai has missed 19 V-League matches in just the past 3 seasons, not counting the matches he missed with the Vietnam national team. Although the Nghe An midfielder started all 4 matches this season for Binh Duong, Ngoc Hai needs more time to adapt to the international competition rhythm, in a position that requires a sense of the ball and near-perfect form.
Team Responsibility
Coach Kim Sang-sik used all the central defenders he had at his disposal, such as Thanh Binh, Thanh Chung, Tuan Duong, Ngoc Hai, and even tested Duc Chien in a three-man defense. However, apart from Thanh Chung, who played a decent role, the remaining central defenders were not stable.
On both sides, Hong Duy, Tuan Tai, Van Khang (left) or Xuan Manh, Van Thanh, Van Vu (right) all showed a tendency to attack more than defend.
Vietnam national team's defense conceded 13 goals in a row
In addition to individual errors, defensive distance is the problem of the Vietnamese team. Although their attacks are not excellent, India has repeatedly exploited the gap between the left-sided center-back and the full-back. Or in the match against Nam Dinh , Mr. Kim's two flanks were easily "pierced" by foreign players to turn the ball inside.
The matches against Russia, Philippines, Thailand, and Iraq also saw the Vietnamese defense being overtaken many times because of a lack of clear defensive tactics. The lines were very far apart, not putting enough pressure, allowing the opponent to freely deploy the ball and then dive deep into the penalty area. When being "slapped in the face" by the opponent throughout the match, it was probably inevitable that the center back would make mistakes.
After 6 months, coach Kim Sang-sik's Vietnam team has just created a new shape in "with the ball" situations. In "without the ball" situations, Ngoc Hai and his teammates are very vulnerable.
