Independence Day - Freedom Day is not only a significant anniversary, but also an opportunity for each generation to reflect, appreciate, preserve, and spread these precious values.

The memories of that historic autumn will forever be etched in my heart!

For Mr. Tran Van Nhan - former Deputy Chairman of the Economic and Budget Committee of the 9th National Assembly, former Chairman of the People's Committee of Binh Dinh province (old), currently living in Quy Nhon ward, the memories of the autumn of 1945 remain vivid in his mind.

At that time, the young Nhẫn was the Deputy Leader of the Children's Team in Kiều Huyên village, Cát Tân commune, Phù Cát district, Bình Định province - now Cát Tân commune, Gia Lai province. Along with other children in the village, he participated in cheering and shouting slogans in support of the Provisional Government, President Ho Chi Minh , and the Viet Minh Front.

Now 91 years old, Mr. Nhan is still deeply moved whenever he recalls those historic days: "The fervent atmosphere of the August Revolution and National Day on September 2, 1945, will forever be etched in my heart!"

Mr. Nhan recalled: "At that time, I was still young, but through the stories of Viet Minh cadres, I learned that at 2 PM on September 2, 1945, on the grand platform in Ba Dinh Square, before hundreds of thousands of people from all over the country with flags, flowers, banners, and slogans, President Ho Chi Minh, on behalf of the Provisional Government, solemnly read the Declaration of Independence, giving birth to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam - the first workers' and peasants' state in Southeast Asia."

“Uncle Ho’s voice echoed throughout the country: ‘Vietnam has the right to enjoy freedom and independence, and in fact, it has become a free and independent nation. The entire Vietnamese people are determined to dedicate all their spirit and strength, lives and property to uphold that right to freedom and independence.’ Uncle Ho’s powerful declaration stirred millions of hearts, filling the entire nation with emotion. As for me, though I was young, my innocent heart was also filled with pride,” Mr. Nhan recounted.

According to Mr. Nhan, since that historic National Day on September 2nd, for the past 80 years, the Party, State, and people of Vietnam have continuously fought to protect the independence, sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, self-determination of the nation, and the freedom and happiness of the people with the spirit that "nothing is more precious than independence and freedom." Vietnam has always actively supported and responsibly contributed to peace, equal relations, and prosperity in the world.

As for Mr. Nhan personally, the achievements of the 1945 autumn revolution marked a turning point in his life. Orphaned at the age of 10, and then again at 14, he grew up under the care and protection of his comrades, fellow soldiers, and the people. The revolution guided him to maturity, fostering his commitment to the ideals of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh, ultimately leading him to become a leading cadre.

He expressed: "I am very proud that over the past 80 years, under the banner of the Party, our nation has gone from one victory to another. From a poor, invaded country, Vietnam now has a high position, a strong foundation, and prestige on the international stage. This is powerful proof of the truth that 'nothing is more precious than independence and freedom' as affirmed by President Ho Chi Minh."

A surge of pride

While for the generation directly involved in the revolution and fighting to defend the Fatherland, the memories of National Day on September 2nd are those of days filled with bloodshed and passion, for the younger generation, those emotions stem from experiences and reflections on life today.

Mr. Ly Anh Dao (born in 1963), Director of SHB Gia Lai Bank, originally from Nghe An province, has been associated with the mountainous city of Pleiku since 1984. Every autumn, amidst the bustling atmosphere of national holidays, his heart swells with pride: “Before National Day, the streets of Pleiku are ablaze with red flags bearing the yellow star. Despite the unpredictable weather of the highlands, on September 2nd, the sky is usually clear and sunny, as if nature itself is joining in the joy with the people. The fluttering red flags are the most beautiful image, symbolizing millions of hearts turned towards the Fatherland.”

Mr. Dao emotionally recalled his childhood memories: family meals had to be served with the lights repeatedly turned on and off in the bomb shelter whenever the alarm sounded about enemy planes; his first, second, and third grade years were spent barefoot, unable to run and play freely, forced to study in the bomb shelter. Back then, his clothes were only black and brown to avoid detection…

It is precisely those memories of hardship that make Mr. Dao appreciate the value of peace today even more. He shared: "For over 40 years living in the highlands, I have witnessed the people of this 'nation rising up' celebrating National Day on September 2nd every year. The peaceful days here – the heroic Central Highlands, the homeland of Hero Núp – are a precious source of emotion that helps me always cherish and be grateful to the generations of our ancestors who fought and sacrificed to regain independence and freedom for the Fatherland, and unify Vietnam. I believe that this special feeling is not unique to me, but is shared by every Vietnamese citizen!"

Show your love for your country through concrete actions.

The older generation wrote history with their blood and sacrifice, and today's young generation has the responsibility to inherit, protect, and spread the values of independence and freedom through learning, creativity, and dedication.

Ms. Tran Thi Thu Thao (born in 2004, residing in Group 4, An Phu Ward), currently a third-year student at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Banking, shared: "Since childhood, my parents have told me about relatives who participated in the resistance war. Every National Day, my father and I would hang the national flag in front of our house, feeling an indescribable sense of pride. As I grew up, through history lessons, trips to historical sites, and visits to martyrs' cemeteries, I understood even more clearly the immense sacrifices made to achieve the independence we have today."

For Ms. Thao and the younger generation, living in peace is a blessing, but it also places a responsibility on them: "We - the young people of today - always remind ourselves to study well, participate in volunteer and charitable activities, care for families of policy beneficiaries, and show gratitude to those who have contributed to the nation. That is how we express our love for the homeland and continue the traditions left by our ancestors."

Ms. Thao proudly recalled President Ho Chi Minh's saying, "Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom." For her, every day of learning, every dream nurtured, carries within it the values that countless generations have sacrificed to preserve.

***

Independence Day has therefore become a part of collective memory, a "Freedom Day" in the national consciousness, reminding us that today's peace was bought with so much blood and sacrifice. Therefore, each generation has the duty to preserve and promote it, working together to build a more beautiful and prosperous homeland.
