More than 20 years ago (2003), Minh Khai plastic recycling village, Nhu Quynh town (Van Lam) was on the list of facilities causing serious environmental pollution according to Decision No. 64/2003/QD-TTg dated April 22, 2003 of the Prime Minister . To reduce environmental pollution in Minh Khai plastic recycling village, over the past 20 years, all levels and sectors from central to local levels have implemented many solutions, but the pollution situation has not been thoroughly handled. There is currently a solid waste collection site with an estimated volume of over 150 thousand tons. Every day, the Minh Khai village waste collection site still receives an additional 50 - 70 tons of waste, causing the waste collection site to become increasingly larger, putting great pressure on the living environment. The collection site often smolders, causing smoke, dust and acrid odors. The air in the village is suffocating, and water and soil sources are seriously polluted.
Plastic recycling in Minh Khai village is always in a state of serious pollution.
Mr. Nguyen Van Phi, a resident of Nhu Quynh town, was upset: My house is a kilometer away from Minh Khai village, but I often smell a burning smell. This is a very characteristic burning smell due to burning plastic. This characteristic burning smell can be due to plastic recycling activities, or it can be due to waste at the collection site being burned. This is a toxic substance, if you smell it a lot, you will feel tightness in the chest, have difficulty breathing, and people with poor health may feel dizzy.

How to preserve and develop craft villages while ensuring the quality of the living environment is an unsolved problem. Many production facilities in craft villages have invested in machinery and equipment to optimize production processes and minimize waste discharged into the environment. However, due to the production scale being mainly household; the production area is located in residential areas, so the production waste of craft villages is discharged together with domestic waste. Most production facilities in craft villages do not have a system to collect and treat wastewater and exhaust gas that meets the requirements of regulations.

Mr. Tran Dang Anh, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, said: To solve the problem of pollution in craft villages, more drastic and synchronous measures are needed, from inspection and punishment to the construction of concentrated production areas. In concentrated production areas, it is necessary to plan and build adequate technical infrastructure, apply advanced waste treatment technology, and meet the requirements for waste treatment according to the scale of the production area. This requires close coordination between the government, organizations, producers and the villagers themselves to ensure a clean living environment and sustainable development for craft villages...
