On the afternoon of June 29th, the Ho Chi Minh City Law Newspaper, in coordination with the People's Committee of Quang Ngai province, organized the program "Lighting Up the Sea with Fishermen," which brought many meaningful benefits to local fishermen.
The program donated 200 gift packages, each containing a battery, LED light bulbs, first-aid kits, a handbook titled "Things to Know About Seafood Fishing," some specialized equipment for fishermen, and shopping vouchers worth 1 million VND. Each gift package was worth more than 5 million VND. The total cost of the donations to the 200 fishermen in Quang Ngai province exceeded 1 billion VND.
In addition, the program organizers also awarded 26 scholarships to 26 students from disadvantaged families who excelled in their studies, each scholarship worth 2 million VND along with a set of school supplies and a school bag. At the same time, 5 tablets and school supplies were also given to 5 students who overcame difficulties and excelled in their studies in the locality, along with special scholarships for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
At the program, Mr. Tran Phuoc Hien, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Ngai province, shared that the province currently has 4,200 fishing vessels, of which nearly 3,100 are offshore fishing vessels. The catch in 2023 reached over 273,000 tons, with the value of the fisheries sector reaching 7,250 billion VND, accounting for 38.5% of the total agricultural production value. The "Lighting Up the Sea with Fishermen" program has provided practical support and assistance to fishermen who are working day and night at sea.
The "Lighting Up the Sea with Fishermen" program, organized by the Ho Chi Minh City Law Newspaper since the beginning of 2023, is expected to take place in 28 coastal provinces and cities nationwide, with a total budget of over 30 billion VND. The program aims to support, encourage, and accompany fishermen, working alongside the Government and local authorities to find solutions to address the "yellow card" warning for Vietnam's fisheries sector.
