Introducing E10 gasoline: People shouldn't be overly concerned.

People can rest assured when using E10 bioethanol fuel; older vehicles that use 92 octane gasoline can choose to use E5 RON 92 gasoline, which is still available on the market.

Most motorcycles and scooters manufactured and sold by the Vietnam Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers (VAMM) can use E10 gasoline.

This was the statement made by Mr. Lu Hainan, Head of the Technical Committee of the Vietnam Motorcycle Manufacturers Association, at the seminar "Is using E10 gasoline a cause for concern?" organized by the Government's Electronic Information Portal on the afternoon of June 1st.

According to Mr. Nam, this assessment is based on evaluations from Vietnamese motorcycle manufacturers and research conducted by the Association.

According to Mr. Nam, when a new product is launched on the market, consumers are always cautious and reserved. For older car models, manufacturers recommend that users contact customer service channels to check if their vehicle is compatible with E10 gasoline, or to receive recommendations on which type of gasoline is suitable for their product.

According to Mr. Nam, the benefit of using E10 gasoline is the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Research by the Vietnam Motorcycle Manufacturers Association and Hanoi University of Technology shows that using E10 gasoline also reduces the concentration of other emissions such as CO (Carbon Monoxide) and HC (Hydrocarbon), reducing the release of harmful substances into the environment. In addition, using E10 gasoline contributes to proactively securing the supply, ensuring energy security, and increasing fuel self-sufficiency.

According to Mr. Dao Duy Anh, Deputy Director of the Department of Innovation, Green Transformation and Industrial Promotion ( Ministry of Industry and Trade), since 2007, the Prime Minister has signed Decision No. 177/2007/QD-TTg approving the Project "Development of Biofuels until 2015, with a vision to 2025."

Based on the Project, in 2012, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 53 stipulating the roadmap for applying the blending ratio between biofuels and traditional fuels in Vietnam. This roadmap outlines the introduction of fuel blends between mineral gasoline and biofuels for use in gasoline engines.

Following that roadmap, after a trial period, E5 gasoline was blended and distributed nationwide from December 1, 2015. Two years later, on December 1, 2017, E10 gasoline was officially distributed nationwide. From January 1, 2018, all types of RON 92 gasoline were blended with 5% ethanol to become E5 RON 92 gasoline and distributed nationwide.

Mr. Dao Duy Anh stated that, in the context of mineral fuels being a finite resource, increasingly depleted through exploitation, and with the goal of building a green economy, a circular economy, and moving towards sustainable development, we have set targets and directions for reducing emissions and fulfilling international commitments to bring net emissions to zero.

Since the end of 2024, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has been developing a new roadmap and organizing numerous surveys and working with scientists to research and send information to the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) and the Vietnam Motorcycle Manufacturers Association (VAMM) to assess the compatibility of vehicles circulating in Vietnam. Based on data from automobile and motorcycle manufacturers, the associations indicate that biofuels are quite safe for vehicles currently in circulation.

Using E10 gasoline contributes to reducing emissions and ensuring energy security.

Explaining the need to use E10 gasoline, Mr. Dao Duy Anh said that the primary goal is environmental protection. Reducing the burning of one liter of gasoline reduces CO2 emissions by approximately 2.5 kg. In addition, biofuels are renewable and can be produced domestically, unlike fossil fuels which are increasingly depleted.

Developing a biofuel industry involves developing a chain from cultivation areas to factories and logistics for distribution and use, thereby contributing to socio-economic development and promoting growth.

Given the ever-present risk of disruptions in the fossil fuel supply chain, enhancing domestic self-sufficiency through new fuel sources will reduce dependence on fossil fuels and contribute to ensuring national energy security.

Emphasizing that this transition to biofuels has been relatively well-prepared and proactive by the Government, state management agencies, and businesses, Chairman of the Vietnam Petroleum Association Bui Ngoc Bao said that we have had 10 years of practical testing since the deployment of E5 gasoline.

To date, the supply of E5 gasoline has gradually decreased due to the shift to higher quality standards. The technical standards of E5 and E10 gasoline are completely identical to those of conventional gasoline in most aspects, the only difference being that E10 gasoline, which is blended with ethanol, has a higher oxygen content, and therefore burns hotter.

Assessing the situation as a ripe time to implement the policy of replacing traditional gasoline with E10 bioethanol, Mr. Dao Duy Anh stated, "Now that we have surveyed, evaluated, and have sufficient information, there is no reason to continue retaining and circulating mineral gasoline."

"If we continue to use fossil fuels, how can we reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and achieve national energy security? That's why the Ministry of Industry and Trade, as well as the Government, are determined to make a thorough transition," stated the Deputy Director of the Department of Innovation, Green Transformation and Industrial Promotion.

In response to consumer concerns that E10 gasoline, blended with 10% ethanol—a strong solvent—will corrode or harden fuel lines, rubber gaskets, and even the engine, and that its strong cleaning properties could lead to dirt buildup in the engine compared to using conventional gasoline, potentially making it difficult to restart a vehicle after prolonged use, Associate Professor Dr. Pham Huu Tuyen, Director of the Center for Research on Power Sources and Autonomous Vehicles at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, advises people not to worry about the impact on vehicle durability.

E10 bioethanol fuel has been used worldwide since the 1980s, and Thailand has also been using it since the 2000s. Through experimental research on several car and motorcycle engine models manufactured before the 2000s, the Center for Research on Power Sources and Autonomous Vehicles found that in some models, the effects of E10 are equivalent to those of pure mineral gasoline.

People can rest assured when using E10 bioethanol fuel. Older vehicles that allow the use of 92 octane gasoline can choose to use E5 RON 92 gasoline, which is still available on the market.

Regarding the hypothesis that using E10 gasoline in cars and motorcycles might lead to reduced engine power, decreased acceleration, and increased fuel consumption, resulting in economic losses for consumers, Mr. Lo Hai Nam analyzed that E10 gasoline has a lower calorific value than regular mineral gasoline. Therefore, to ensure engine power, fuel consumption when using E10 gasoline will increase by about 2% compared to regular mineral gasoline.
