Trinh and the painter from Hue

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên01/04/2024

One of the unforgettable memories was the time he sat down for coffee with Trinh on Doan Thi Diem Street. "One summer afternoon, when the weather turned to autumn around 1973 - 1974, we were sitting and chatting at a small cafe in front of Hien Nhon ( Hue Imperial City) when a gust of wind came. Royal poinciana petals fluttered down. A romantic scene appeared before our eyes. Mr. Son praised it as beautiful...", painter Dang Mau Tuu recalled.

Trinh Cong Son is an endless source of inspiration.

Painter Dang Mau Tuu met and had the opportunity to chat with Trinh Cong Son many times when the musician visited the art school and the house of his close friend, painter Dinh Cuong. Several times when he visited the Hue Literature and Arts Association at 26 Le Loi, painter Dang Mau Tuu also met and listened to senior artists such as painter Buu Chi, poet Lam Thi My Da, etc. talk. Most memorable was in 1973, musician Trinh Cong Son and singer Khanh Ly organized a music event to raise funds to support poor art students.

"And I got a scholarship. In the hearts of fellow artists, each person remembers him in a different way. As for me, Son's image and his musical philosophy are the inspiration for many paintings...", artist Dang Mau Tuu recalls.

Stemming from his feelings and memories of Trinh Cong Son, in his creative career, Mr. Tuu has devoted many canvases and colors to create paintings that express his admiration for the musician. Among them are works such as: White Summer, Ancient Tower Rain, Random, Wanderer Singer ... In particular, from the chance to witness the scene of phoenix flowers flying with the musician on Doan Thi Diem Street that year, painter Dang Mau Tuu painted the painting Pink Rain like the title of the musician's song, famous for the lyrics "The road of phoenix flowers flying blindly without a way in" . This painting was brought to participate in the exhibition "Nemesis" , in commemoration of the 15th anniversary of the death of the late musician (April 1, 2001 - April 1, 2016). "Nemesis" brings together 25 works by 12 painters in Hue, inspired by the person and music of Trinh Cong Son.

At that time, sharing with Thanh Nien , painter Dang Mau Triet (another Hue painter who also has many works about Trinh) confided that the music and artist Trinh Cong Son are an endless source of inspiration for admirers, including painters. Some are friends, some have only met or had a drink or coffee with the musician a couple of times, but there are also many young artists who love him through his music, lyrics and wandering philosophy.

WAITING FOR A MASTERPIECE

For the past 23 years, since the talented musician left this world, artists in the ancient capital have held exhibitions to commemorate Trinh Cong Son on each anniversary of his death. As an artist inspired by Trinh's lyrics about the image of horses, such as in the song "One day in early autumn, hearing the horse's hooves returning to a distant place..." (A place to go and return) , in 2014, to commemorate the 13th anniversary of musician Trinh Cong Son's death and the 1st anniversary of the opening of Trinh's Attic, artist Dang Mau Triet and other art troupes opened the exhibition Horse's Hoofprints to display 30 oil paintings.

Painter Dang Mau Tuu added that although he was a great musician, Trinh Cong Son always lives in the hearts of Hue painters as a talented, simple senior...

"The musician's passing left great regret, so on the 100th day of his death, the Thua Thien-Hue Union of Literature and Arts Associations and the Hue City Department of Culture and Information organized an exhibition of paintings by two artists, Dinh Cuong and Buu Chi, to commemorate him. Ten years after his death, Hue artists, including me, opened an exhibition Remembering Trinh Cong Son at the Huong River Magazine in a warm and emotional atmosphere...", said Mr. Tuu. After that, the musician's family continued to select a number of works to organize another exhibition in Hue.

According to the assessment of painter Nguyen Thien Duc, Chairman of the Thua Thien-Hue Fine Arts Association, painters who paint about Trinh Cong Son are part of a group of people who love his music and life, initially limited to a number of relatively older painters. Later, a number of young painters also began to be inspired by Trinh Cong Son's music to create. Having participated in the evaluation board of works at two fine art creation campaigns organized by the late musician's family, Mr. Duc found that it was the "most concentrated activity with specific criteria and high quality about Trinh Cong Son". The remaining painters who compose about the musician, from feeling the music and redrawing it, "are still not concentrated".

"The musical themes of musician Trinh Cong Son are very abstract, while painting is something concrete, so I'm afraid it won't fully express his spirit. He wrote about rain, about Hue, but never mentioned any specific words. Converting his music into visual language is very difficult. Painters still find it difficult to capture the soul and musical ideas of Trinh Cong Son...", painter Nguyen Thien Duc said. He feels that Trinh's music is something immense, "so when painting it will easily dry up". The images illustrate, but his music does not illustrate.

"I think there should be no limits, but let those who love and admire Trinh Cong Son create paintings. At some point, a masterpiece of art about him will appear," commented the Chairman of the Thua Thien-Hue Fine Arts Association. (to be continued)
