Growing seedless cucumbers and lemons according to GAP standards

The GAP cucumber growing model helps farmers change their farming practices towards safety and clean production.

In recent times, the locality and people of Dong Thanh commune (Binh Minh town) have made efforts to implement many solutions to transform the structure of crops and livestock, develop many effective agricultural models, thereby contributing to increasing production efficiency and improving people's lives.

According to the People's Committee of Dong Thanh commune, the production of safe agricultural products according to VietGAP standards, applying new techniques, and organic orientation is the current production trend of farmers. Accordingly, many effective agricultural models have been deployed and expanded in the commune, contributing to changing farmers' farming practices, improving production efficiency, and increasing profits.

In particular, the GAP-oriented cucumber growing model of the commune has 22 members in Thanh An hamlet participating, with a total cucumber growing area of 9.5 hectares, an average yield of 35 tons/ha/crop, selling price from 7,000-9,000 VND/kg, excluding costs, the average farmer income is from 290 million VND/ha/crop, compared to the area not participating in the model, the income is 50-80 million VND/ha/year higher.

With nearly 5 hectares of cucumbers in the second harvest season, Mr. Vo Thanh Hien (Thanh An Hamlet, Dong Thanh Commune) said: “I have been growing cucumbers for nearly 20 years. I have also been guided by the local authorities to produce in a safe way. This cucumber variety is easy to care for and has a short harvest time. I grow 3 crops of cucumbers a year, and it is close to Tet so the cucumbers are also priced well. After deducting expenses, I still have a good profit, thanks to that I can have a healthy Tet holiday. In about 2 weeks, I will also plant the next crop to sell after Tet.”

According to Mr. Hien, although growing melons is easy, it requires regular visits to the fields and keeping enough water in the furrows. In addition, the tops and branches of the climbing plants need to be tied to the trellis and yellow leaves and wilted spots must be regularly trimmed to avoid spreading disease to the fields. Melons grow very quickly, reaching standard size in just one day, so they need to be harvested regularly. In addition, it is also necessary to pay attention to diseases on melons to prevent them in time.

Mr. Le Van Det - Secretary and Head of Thanh An Hamlet, said: In the hamlet, there are many agricultural models that bring high economic efficiency. Among them, the model of growing cucumbers according to GAP standards has been implemented by the people and achieved efficiency.

Farmers also regularly exchange production experiences to improve productivity and quality. Accordingly, the locality also provides training and guidance to farmers to use less chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and instead use biological and organic fertilizers to protect the soil and ensure consumer safety.

Besides the cucumber growing model, the seedless lemon growing model in the commune also brings high economic efficiency and stable income for the people.

Specifically, this model has 15 members in Dong Thanh A hamlet, Thanh Hoa, Thanh Ly with a total lemon growing area of 39.5 hectares, of which 10.6 hectares participate in the model, with an average yield of 53 tons/ha/year, an average selling price of 8,000-14,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, people earn an average profit of over 500 million VND/ha/year, compared to the area not participating in the model, the income is 100-150 million VND/ha/year higher.

Having 15 hectares of seedless lemon trees, Mr. Tran Van Trung (Dong Thanh A hamlet, Dong Thanh commune) said: This type of lemon tree can be harvested after more than 1 year, 2 times a month, 4 tons of fruit. There is a company that buys and consumes the lemon trees at a stable price, earning about 60 million VND/month.

“The hardest part of this lemon is making the fruit. I also researched and learned from experience to make the tree bear fruit regularly. Thanks to that, I always have something to eat, and this year's Tet holiday is also more prosperous,” Trung said happily.

According to Mr. Le Thanh Son - Vice Chairman of Dong Thanh Commune People's Committee, with good growth ability, it initially shows that many agricultural models adapt well to climate change, growing many crops a year.

Farmers are also aware of changing their practices towards safety, applying techniques to production, thereby helping to increase productivity, product quality, and increase farmers' income.

The seedless lemon growing model brings quite a profit to farmers.

It can be seen that thanks to the appropriate conversion of crop structure, it has contributed to helping the locality restructure the agricultural sector towards increasing added value, sustainable development, contributing to increasing income for people in rural areas, creating stable jobs, improving income, and improving the quality of life.

At the same time, create conditions for people to make the most of land and climate advantages to develop the economy, contributing to diversifying agricultural production.

According to Mr. Truong Dang Vinh Phuc - Secretary of Binh Minh Town Party Committee, in 2023, Binh Minh Town will have many production models that bring high economic efficiency, some models have widespread impacts and are widely replicated in the community. In the coming time, the town will continue to concretize and implement Resolution No. 03-NQ/TU, dated December 1, 2021 of the Provincial Party Committee on developing high-tech agriculture in the period of 2021-2030; replicate effective economic models, experimental models of organic production, developing craft villages, OCOP products, etc. Focus on effectively mobilizing resources from society to participate in building new rural areas and civilized urban areas.
