The refereeing team for the friendly match between Vietnam and Cambodia on the evening of March 19th had a special name. In addition to the main referee and two assistants who are all from Hong Kong (China), Mr. Le Vu Linh was assigned to the role of fourth referee (table referee).
Mr. Le Vu Linh is the latest person to cause a stir about the refereeing issue in Vietnamese football. A month ago (February 21), this referee was suspended from duty by the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF).
Referee Le Vu Linh
Referee Le Vu Linh caused a lot of controversy in the match between Ho Chi Minh City and Thanh Hoa clubs in round 13 of V.League 2024-2025 (held on February 14). The Vietnam Football Federation confirmed that the referee had "some mistakes, including a situation in the 65th minute that could have affected the outcome of the match".
In the 65th minute, the referee did not award a penalty to Thanh Hoa FC. Mr. Le Vu Linh and his assistant had penalized A Mit for offside in the previous move. The match video showed that this was a clear wrong decision by the referee team. VAR also did not intervene in this situation.
On February 15, this FIFA-level referee appeared again in a controversial match between Binh Duong and Ha Tinh clubs. The main referee did not award Ha Tinh a penalty when a slow-motion replay showed that the ball could have touched a Binh Duong player's hand right in front of the goal. Mr. Le Vu Linh was in charge of the VAR (video assistant referee) team.
Le Vu Linh has not been assigned to officiate any matches (both as a main referee and a table referee) in the V.League since the two scandalous matches above. The announcement of the Vietnam Football Federation did not specify which tournament, specific match, and for how long referee Le Vu Linh has stopped officiating.
