Referee involved in match-fixing officiated Man Utd - Tottenham match

Referee Zwayer was banned from football for six months by the German Football Federation (DFB) for his involvement in a match-fixing scandal in 2005.

Zwayer was one of the referees who brought the match-fixing scandal of German second-tier referee Robert Hoyzer to light, and Hoyzer was permanently suspended. Zwayer has always denied any involvement in Hoyzer's match-fixing in the match between Wuppertal and Werder Bremen II, and the DFB investigation found no evidence that he made any decision to change the outcome of the match.

However, Zwayer was found to have accepted a payment of 300 euros from Hoyzer. He was therefore suspended for failing to reject the offer and then failing to report it properly.

Midfielder Jude Bellingham was fined €40,000 for comments about Zwayer in 2021 when he criticised the referee's decisions following Borussia Dortmund's 3-2 defeat to Bayern Munich.

"You put a referee who has fixed games before into the biggest game in Germany. What do you expect?", Bellingham told ViaPlay after the match.

Zwayer has been a FIFA referee since 2012. He has mainly worked in the Bundesliga and is also regularly used for UEFA matches. He has officiated the UEFA Nations League final between Spain and Italy in 2023 and the Euro 2024 semi-final between England and the Netherlands.

The May final will be Zwayer's second Europa League match this season, following the second leg of the round of 16 tie between Olympiacos and Bodo/Glimt. Zwayer's most recent European match was Paris Saint-Germain's 2-1 win over Arsenal in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final.

The Europa League final is being held at Athletic Club's San Mames stadium in Bilbao, Spain. Tottenham, who finished 17th in the Premier League, beat Glimt 5-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals, while 16th-placed Man Utd ended Athletic Bilbao's chances of playing in the final at home with a 7-1 aggregate win.

UEFA has also confirmed the appointment of Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs as the referee for the men's Champions League final between Inter and Paris Saint-Germain, while Croatian referee Ivana Martincic will take charge of the women's final between Barcelona and Arsenal.

Kovacs refereed the Euro 2024 group stage match between the Czech Republic and Türkiye, which is considered the dirtiest match in the history of the tournament, when Kovacs issued a record 18 bookings including 16 yellow cards and two red cards.

This season's Champions League final in Munich will be Kovacs' third UEFA club competition final, after he took charge of the 2024 Europa League final and the 2022 Conference League final.

Martincic was the fourth official for last season's Women's Champions League final between Barcelona and Lyon, and has been named as a referee at Euro 2025 this summer.

Irfan Peljto will referee the Conference League final between Chelsea and Real Betis, marking the first time a Bosnian and Herzegovinian referee has officiated in a UEFA club competition final.
