World Cup referees make a lot of money. |
According to former renowned referee Mark Clattenburg, those assigned to officiate key matches at the 2026 World Cup could receive fees of up to over £50,000.
Among the referees selected by FIFA to participate in the 2026 World Cup are two familiar names from the Premier League: Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor. Both are considered among the top referees in Europe and harbor ambitions to officiate the final, the most prestigious milestone in any referee's career.
Speaking on the "Whistleblowers" podcast, former referee Clattenburg stated that the income of referees in major tournaments hasn't changed much in recent years. According to him, referees officiating from the knockout rounds at Euro 2016 received nearly £60,000 in fees, including officiating the final match.
A former English referee revealed that FIFA now uses a system of paying per match instead of a fixed amount for the entire tournament. Those assigned to officiate knockout matches or the final receive significantly higher compensation.
According to The Sun , the total income of a referee officiating a World Cup final can range from £45,000 to £52,000. In addition, they receive living allowances during their time on duty.
In exchange for attractive remuneration, referees will face immense pressure when officiating high-stakes matches at the 2026 World Cup, a tournament that attracts the attention of billions of football fans worldwide .
