As a man who dominated Southeast Asia for many years in the men's decathlon event as an athlete, Vu Van Huyen still praised Nguyen Linh Na as a person with admirable will and determination.
Among Nguyen Linh Na's many efforts to overcome difficulties, coach Vu Van Huyen remembers the story from 3 years ago. At that time, Linh Na suffered a serious injury that led to necrosis in the hamstring muscles and required surgery. Many people at that time thought that the career of the athlete born in 1997 was over, because for every track and field athlete, the legs are extremely important. Not giving up to adversity, Linh Na, with her strong will, made an impressive comeback. For the first time participating in the Southeast Asian Games in 2022 (SEA Games 31), Nguyen Linh Na excellently won the gold medal (HCV) in the women's heptathlon event, at the same time breaking the national record. Seven months later at the National Sports Festival in 2022, Nguyen Linh Na excellently won the championship, continuing to break the national record and the Games record. Evaluating Nguyen Linh Na, Coach Vu Van Huyen concluded: “Linh Na is one of the best athletes I have trained. With her will, talent and good physical condition, Linh Na’s career will go far.”
In every congress and tournament, the women's heptathlon in athletics is always considered a tough event for women. So what is the heptathlon? In two days, each athlete must conquer each event, including: 100m, 200m, 800m, 100m hurdles, high jump, long jump and shot put. This event requires endurance, strong will and versatility of the athlete. However, unlike many athletes who have to try their hand at events before choosing their specialty, Nguyen Linh Na started her career in the heptathlon at the age of 14. Explaining this decision, Nguyen Linh Na shared: "I like challenges and want to conquer difficult things."
Born into a family of four sisters in Hoa Binh province, Nguyen Linh Na's choice to pursue a career in sports surprised everyone. But Linh Na's parents both supported and respected her decision even though their daughter had to be away from home often. According to Nguyen Linh Na, being a female athlete has many disadvantages, having to "exert sun and rain" all day, and the number of times she can go home for family meals can be counted on the fingers of one hand, and many times she has to practice during Tet. "As a girl, everyone wants to be beautiful and wants to be beautiful. However, the cycle of training and competition does not give me much time to take care of myself, and does not have many opportunities to be with loved ones. That is a disadvantage for female athletes, but we are used to it because if we love sports, we have to accept it and always nurture the desire to win to achieve high results," Nguyen Linh Na confided.
With the will to overcome difficulties and contributions to Army sports in particular and Vietnamese sports in general, Nguyen Linh Na was recently voted into the list of "10 outstanding young faces of the entire army in 2022". Surprised to be voted, Nguyen Linh Na affirmed that she will strive to practice and compete to be worthy of the above title. After an unexpectedly successful 2022, Nguyen Linh Na's goal in 2023 is to successfully defend the SEA Games gold medal, while improving her competition scores in the 7 women's triathlon events.
