Venerable Thich Minh Thanh - Vice Principal and Chief Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City Buddhist College - informed Giac Ngo Online that after a period of illness due to old age, Venerable Thich Tu Thong passed away at 12:40 on October 17 (26th day of the 8th lunar month) at Ho Chi Minh City Buddhist College.
Venerable Elder Thich Tu Thong was born in 1928. His whole life was devoted to the cause of propagating Dharma, educating and training monks and nuns. He has been the Principal of the Intermediate Buddhist School (formerly the Ho Chi Minh City Basic Buddhist School) since its establishment in 1988 until now.
He used to be the Deputy Head of the Executive Committee and Member of the Buddhist Education Committee, Head of the Buddhist Education Committee (now the Buddhist Education Committee) of the Ho Chi Minh City Buddhist Sangha.
Venerable Elder Thich Tu Thong is a famous lecturer, especially associated with the Vinh Nghiem Pagoda lecture hall for a long time; with thousands of sermons and author of many works and poems under the pen name of Zen Master Nhu Huyen.
He is also the author of many books on the Lotus Sutra, the Avatamsaka Sutra, the Vimalakirti Sutra, the Shurangama Sutra, and the Vijñāptimātratā-śāstra.
In recent years, the elder monk chose to live a solitary life in Lam Ha, Lam Dong . In his final days, his relatives invited him to Ho Chi Minh City for a health check-up, but due to his old age, the elder monk passed away in the meditation room at the Buddhist College, the school where he had been the Principal for the past 37 years.
