According to Giac Ngo Online , Venerable Thich Minh Thanh, Vice Principal and Chief Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Buddhist Intermediate School, informed that after a period of infirmity due to old age, the Venerable Thich Tu Thong passed away at 12:40 PM on October 17th (corresponding to the 26th day of the 8th lunar month) at the Ho Chi Minh City Buddhist Intermediate School.
Venerable Thich Tu Thong, born in 1928, has dedicated his entire life to the propagation of Buddhism, education , and training of monks and nuns. He has served as the Principal of the Buddhist Intermediate School (formerly the Ho Chi Minh City Basic Buddhist School) from its establishment in 1988 to the present day.
He previously served as Deputy Head of the Executive Board and Member of the Monastic Education Committee, and Head of the Monastic Education Committee (now the Buddhist Education Committee) of the Ho Chi Minh City Buddhist Association.
Venerable Thich Tu Thong was a renowned lecturer, particularly associated with the lecture halls of Vinh Nghiem Pagoda for a long time; he delivered thousands of sermons and authored numerous works and poems under the pen name Nhu Huyen Thien Su.
He is also the author of many books outlining the Lotus Sutra, the Perfect Enlightenment Sutra, the Vimalakirti Sutra, the Shurangama Sutra, the Consciousness-only Sutra, etc.
In recent years, the venerable monk chose a solitary life in Lam Ha, Lam Dong . In his final days, he was invited by his close associates to Ho Chi Minh City for a health check-up, but due to his advanced age, the venerable monk passed away in his meditation room at the Buddhist Intermediate School, the school where he had served as principal for the past 37 years.
