In the middle of the Muong Nhe mountains and forests, Tran Van Tho Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities is quietly writing a story of educational innovation. The 2018 General Education Program is not only being implemented systematically but also spreading through the perseverance of teachers, the desire to learn of students and the belief in letters in the highlands.

The new school has invested in quite spacious facilities, partly meeting the needs of teaching and learning.

Tran Van Tho Primary School for Ethnic Minorities is located in Phieng Kham village, Muong Nhe commune, with 5 satellite schools spread across Na Pan, Nam La, Tan Phong, Nam San 1 and Nam San 2 villages. This is where letters have to cross deep forests and high mountains to reach nearly 1,000 students - of which 722 are ethnic minorities.

Amidst the challenges of the terrain and the difficult lives of the people, the 2018 general education program has been implemented systematically and creatively by the school. Since then, the quality of students' learning has continuously improved, and listening, speaking, reading, writing and calculation skills have been nurtured every day. The rate of students meeting the requirements each year is high, with the goal of having at least 97% of students meeting the standards by the end of 2025, with 100% of grade 5 students reaching the standards.

Each lesson is an exciting experience for both teacher and students.

Principal Pham Van Khiem said: Right from the beginning of the school year, the school has surveyed and differentiated each group of students, from which it has assigned teachers appropriately to gradually help students develop comprehensively in terms of qualities and abilities in accordance with the new 2018 General Education Program.

Not only the students, the teaching staff here is also renewing themselves every day. Although there is still a shortage of 8 teachers compared to the standard of 1.5 teachers/class, but with reasonable assignment and efforts to overcome difficulties, 43 teachers still regularly bring knowledge to each class. The school also organizes regular professional activities, learning and exchanging, from the group level to the cluster level, the department level - all for the sole purpose: to help students learn better, happier.

The innovations of the new program are also realized by technology. The school applies AI, digital software, electronic transcripts, online teaching for classes lacking teachers - things that were thought to only exist in urban areas are now present in the border areas. 100% of classes use digital transcripts through VnEdu software; teachers apply modern tools such as ChatGPT, Canva, Suno to make lectures more vivid and attractive.

Students have access to information technology.

“Another bright spot is the special attention paid to ethnic minority students. In addition to the program to enhance Vietnamese for grades 1, 2 and 3 under the direction of the Ministry of Education, the school also organizes weekly library reading sessions. Here, children who hold a book for the first time know how to cherish it, are curious, and dream – a small but hopeful sign of long-term change,” said Mr. Pham Van Khiem.

Principal Pham Van Khiem added: This journey has not been without hardships. Computers are old, teachers are overloaded, and some lessons still depend on remote support. To achieve the above achievements, the school has persevered step by step, both teaching and proposing improvements to conditions, both teaching and inspiring students to learn for life.

After class, students have the opportunity to learn knowledge through books, newspapers, and documents at the school library.

It can be said that those highland classrooms are a living testament to the resilient spirit of Vietnamese education in the journey of innovation. The 2018 General Education Program, despite many challenges, is gradually spreading its values – from textbooks to students’ eyes, from directive documents to the smiles of children writing their full names for the first time.

At the frontier, education is not retreating. And each step forward, however slow, carries with it the hope of a land.
