Posthumously awarding the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces to Colonel Bui Van Tung

On October 17, President Vo Van Thuong signed a decision to posthumously award the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces to five individuals with outstanding achievements in the resistance war against the US to save the country.

The individuals posthumously awarded the title include: Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Minh Thao (Ta Thai An), former Commander of the Central Highlands Front; Senior Lieutenant General Vu Lang, former Commander of the Central Highlands Front, former Commander of the 3rd Army Corps.

Senior Lieutenant General Dang Vu Hiep (Dang Hung), former Chief of Politics , former Political Commissar of the Central Highlands Front, former Political Commissar of Army Corps 3; Colonel Bui Van Tung, former Political Commissar of Tank Brigade 203, Army Corps 2; Martyr Nguyen Luong Dinh, former Squad Leader of Company 4, Head of Pipeline Group 593, Truong Son Command.

President Vo Van Thuong also signed a decision to confer the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces during the anti-French period on Lieutenant General Dang Quan Thuy, former Commander of Military Region 2, former Vice Chairman of the National Assembly, former Chairman of the Vietnam Veterans Association ; Lieutenant General Dang Kinh, former Commander of Military Region 3, former Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army.

Among the 5 individuals posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces during the resistance war against the US to save the country, Colonel Bui Van Tung is known as a witness to the historic moment of April 30, 1975 at the Independence Palace.

According to the People's Army Newspaper, Colonel Bui Van Tung (also known as Political Commissar Bui Tung) was the one who drafted the unconditional surrender on April 30, 1975 and forced Mr. Duong Van Minh, President of the Republic of Vietnam regime, to read it on Saigon Radio.

He also represented the Liberation Army of South Vietnam to accept the surrender of Duong Van Minh, marking the end of the war in Vietnam.

Colonel Bui Van Tung passed away in February 2023, at the age of 94.
