How is the Dong Bai ferry terminal different from the Got ferry terminal?
On February 26th, Mr. Nguyen Duc Tho, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hai Phong City, conducted a field inspection of the preparations for putting the Dong Bai ferry terminal in Cat Hai district into operation, replacing the Got ferry terminal that transports tourists to Cat Ba Island.
Based on observations, the ferry terminal is currently undergoing improvements to its infrastructure, landscaping, waiting areas, and operating schedules, in preparation for its launch.
Trial ferry operations are underway at the new Dong Bai ferry terminal, replacing the old Got ferry terminal.
During the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Duc Tho requested Cat Ba Sun Company Limited to urgently complete the procedures and hand over the shared technical infrastructure facilities before February 28th.
Hai Phong Waterway Traffic Assurance Joint Stock Company will take over, arrange, and complete the waiting area, control room, and auxiliary facilities at the leased Dong Bai ferry terminal to put them into operation from March 1st.
The Vice Chairman of the Hai Phong City People's Committee instructed the City's Department of Transport to review and install signage and directional signs at the new ferry terminal and access roads. They were also tasked with coordinating with relevant units to complete the passenger ferry terminal infrastructure so that it can be put into operation at the beginning of the tourist season, during the April 30th - May 1st holiday; and to inspect and review the passenger transport capacity of the Hai Phong Waterway Transport Assurance Joint Stock Company to assess the technical condition and safety level of the old ferries.
Previously, from February 17-26, 2024, Hai Phong Waterway Transport Safety Joint Stock Company conducted trial ferry operations on a new route (Dong Bai - Cai Vieng), replacing the old route (Got - Cai Vieng). The operating team determined that the new route would be over 400 meters longer. The travel time for tourists and vehicles on the ferry would be approximately 15 minutes longer.
Workers from Hai Phong Waterway Safety Joint Stock Company are directing traffic to the new Dong Bai ferry terminal.
During the trial operation at the new ferry terminal, issues arose such as the new terminal's slope of 13 degrees, which is higher than the old terminal's slope of 11 degrees, along with higher wave fluctuations, making operation more difficult. However, according to representatives of the terminal management board, these issues will be resolved in the near future.
Specifically, the new ferry terminal has a steeper slope than the old one, making it more difficult and time-consuming for passenger cars and vehicles to board and disembark. However, the technical team of Hai Phong Waterway Transport Assurance Joint Stock Company has devised a solution by redesigning the ramps for boarding and disembarking the ferry, allowing vehicles to move more easily.
According to the leaders of Hai Phong Waterway Transport Assurance Joint Stock Company, the Got - Cai Vieng ferry currently transports an average of 3,700 passengers and 750 vehicles per day. During weekends and holidays like April 30th - May 1st, the number of passengers and vehicles increases 1.5-2 times. During peak tourist months, the ferry terminal frequently operates at full capacity, leading to overcrowding and congestion.
The passenger waiting area at the new ferry terminal is more modern and spacious, in line with the tourism development of Hai Phong City.
For this reason, the issue of traffic congestion at Gót ferry terminal, which has been discussed repeatedly for many years, has been one of the main concerns of Hai Phong city's leaders.
At the 13th session (the regular year-end session) of the 16th term of the Hai Phong City People's Council, a decision was made to replace the Got ferry terminal with a new Dong Bai terminal. This will be a solution to alleviate congestion when tourists travel through the Lach Huyen estuary to Cat Ba Island.
The transport capacity is 2.5 times higher.
The Cat Ba archipelago, along with Ha Long Bay, was recognized by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage site in 2023. According to a report from the People's Committee of Cat Hai district, the number of tourists visiting Cat Ba Island in 2024 is expected to exceed 3.6 million.
Most tourists arrive in Cat Ba by land. Therefore, putting the Dong Bai ferry terminal into operation before the summer of 2024 will make it easier for tourists to travel to Cat Ba Island, reduce traffic congestion, and minimize waiting times for ferries.
At the same time, the new ferry terminal is one and a half times larger than the old one, with a waiting area of over 800m² and a covered area of nearly 1,500m², which will provide a convenient place for tourists to rest and relax while waiting for the ferry.
The new Dong Bai ferry terminal is bigger and wider than the old one.
In addition, during the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Duc Tho, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hai Phong City, requested Cat Ba Sun Company to quickly complete the infrastructure and put the tourist ferry terminal in the complex at Dong Bai wharf into operation during the 2024 tourist season.
Therefore, in addition to traveling to Cat Hai Island by ferry, tourists can choose to travel by nearby cable car or by speedboat from Dong Bai pier to reach Phu Quoc Island.
The working group of the Hai Phong City People's Committee inspected the final trial run at the new Dong Bai ferry terminal.
To improve transportation capacity and passenger transport, in accordance with the directives of the City People's Committee, Bay View Company is urgently building five new, modern ferries with faster speeds and three times the capacity of the old ferries at the old terminal.
According to a report from Hai Phong Waterway Transport Assurance Joint Stock Company, three new ferries will be delivered and put into service before April 30, 2024, and the next two ferries will be delivered in July 2024.
The five new ferries, which have been completely redesigned and put into service, will improve transport capacity, carrying passengers 2.5 times more than currently.
